How democracy deceives Us [EN/PT]

A country's democracy should be taken seriously in order to reaffirm the values of transparency, pluralism and the need to serve the population. Power should be exercised by the people, directly or indirectly, through free and fair elections, in order to elect representatives who fight for the common good. However, we know that this doesn't always happen. Politicians here only appear every four years to ask for support and make promises that are rarely kept. They cheat, lie and do anything to get elected, using power for their own benefit rather than for what they should really be doing.

I have an aversion to politics and, above all, to politicians. Election time is a real nightmare for me, and right now it's open season on lies here in Brazil. Mayors and councillors parade around town chasing votes with their promises and smiling faces, trying to pass off a decent image so that people will choose them when they vote. Every year it's the same repertoire: a few different faces, but always the same intention behind their words.

In my opinion, there are two problems, both with the same degree of criticality, that explain why things continue like this. Firstly, anyone can run for office. This sounds great when we talk about democracy, but in practice it doesn't work. Whoever has the most power of persuasion, the most financial backing for their campaign and the most money to make a name for themselves wins. That's bad enough, but what's worse is that if anyone can be elected, we'll have anyone managing the resources of a city, state or country.

At the very least, only qualified, educated and competent people should be able to run for office. Who would hire someone for their company just because they are popular and not qualified? This only happens in politics, precisely in the most important sector compared to any other.

The second point, as serious as the first, is that there is no point in democracy if a large part of the population is ignorant and chooses any politician for power. What an interesting cycle: ignorant people elect incompetent politicians, and these incompetent politicians keep the population ignorant because they don't invest in what should be the most important thing, education. So the politicians always win. Uninformed people put them in power and don't realize the evil that goes on while they are there, sucking up as much as they can and playing politics, while the population suffers.

For me, the problem lies in these two points mentioned above. Democracy is beautiful on paper or in more developed nations, where the people don't accept certain attitudes, they question, fight and demand from those in power. But in reality, it doesn't work as it should, the system is already programmed to be that way. However, if there is no democracy, what other way would there be? There is no other way, but we can't be naive and say that it works as it should either.

Well, I'm not an expert on the subject, that's just my view of things. But if anything should be done, it's to wake up the population in some way so that they can see what's really going on. Elect them, or at least try to find out who they are voting for, so that they can then demand action to change things. Only then will we take a step in the right direction.

A democracia de um país deveria ser levada a sério para reafirmar os valores da transparência, do pluralismo e da necessidade de atender à população. O poder deve ser exercido pelo povo, direta ou indiretamente, por meio de eleições livres e justas, de forma a eleger representantes que lutem pelo bem comum. No entanto, sabemos que isso nem sempre acontece. Os políticos por aqui só aparecem de quatro em quatro anos para pedir apoio e fazer promessas que raramente são cumpridas. Enganam, mentem e fazem qualquer coisa para serem eleitos, usando o poder em benefício próprio, e não para aquilo que realmente deveriam fazer.

Eu tenho aversão à política e, principalmente, aos políticos. O período de eleições para mim é um verdadeiro pesadelo, e neste exato momento está aberta a temporada de mentiras aqui no Brasil. Prefeitos e vereadores desfilam pela cidade atrás de votos com suas promessas e rostos sorridentes, tentando passar uma imagem digna para que as pessoas os escolham na hora da votação. Todo ano é o mesmo repertório: algumas caras diferentes, mas sempre a mesma intenção por trás de suas palavras.

Na minha opinião, existem dois problemas, ambos com o mesmo grau de criticidade, que explicam por que as coisas continuam assim. Primeiro, qualquer pessoa pode se candidatar. Isso parece ótimo quando falamos de democracia, mas, na prática, não funciona. Ganha quem tem mais poder de persuasão, mais apoio financeiro para a campanha e mais verba para se destacar. Isso já é ruim, mas o pior é que, se qualquer um pode ser eleito, teremos qualquer um administrando os recursos de uma cidade, estado ou país.

O mínimo deveria ser que apenas pessoas qualificadas, instruídas e competentes pudessem se candidatar. Quem contrataria uma pessoa para sua empresa apenas por ela ser popular e não qualificada? Isso só acontece na política, justamente no setor mais importante, comparado a qualquer outro.

O segundo ponto, tão grave quanto o primeiro, é que não adianta haver democracia se grande parte da população é ignorante e escolhe qualquer político para o poder. Veja que ciclo interessante: pessoas ignorantes elegem políticos incompetentes, e esses incompetentes mantêm a população ignorante, pois não investem no que deveria ser o mais importante, a educação. Assim, os políticos sempre vencem. Pessoas desinformadas os colocam no poder e não percebem a maldade que ocorre enquanto estão ali, sugando o máximo que podem e brincando de política, enquanto a população sofre.

Para mim, o problema está nesses dois pontos citados acima. A democracia é bonita no papel ou em nações mais desenvolvidas, onde o povo não admite certas atitudes, questiona, luta e cobra de quem está no poder. Mas, na realidade, ela não funciona como deveria, o sistema já está programado para ser assim. No entanto, se não houver democracia, de que outra forma seria? Não existe outra forma, mas também não podemos ser ingênuos e dizer que ela funciona como deveria.

Bem, eu não sou um expert no assunto, essa é apenas a minha visão das coisas. Mas, se algo deve ser feito, é acordar a população de alguma maneira para que ela possa ver o que realmente acontece. Eleger ou, pelo menos, procurar saber em quem está votando, para que então se possa cobrar atitudes que possam mudar as coisas. Só assim daremos um passo na direção certa.
