Weighing Privacy And Professional Ambition

This issue had once come up for the first time to my knowledge during a class I attended, that companies do check the social accounts of their employees especially before employment in some bigger companies. Their reason is mainly for the image of the company, not to be seen wrongly by the public because of an employee.

And yeah, I do see the sense in that action and to a very good extent, I'm in support of companies going that length for the safety of their company, this safety actually extends to all the workers in it, not just the image. If a company is made to look bad, it might go under and workers will lose their jobs so workers have a responsibility too.

Why am I focusing on the possibility that a company could look bad because of some employee actions? Well, I've heard of a story like that and the company regretted employing him without a particular condition. How people use social media wrongly now is alarming, you'll find the ones that their everyday lives are online.

Let me share a short story, A guy took a shot of himself at his house, uploaded it to the public, he took another as he left his house for a business purpose, uploaded it again, at the airport, he uploaded another announcing he's traveling for a potential good business deal. Well, this guy came back to find his house robbed and looked empty.

It turned out he didn't know when he uploaded the location of his house in the picture, he's a celebrity considering his number of followers and so, he got some bad eyes on him unluckily but luckily to them for his uncontrolled social media uploads. That story made me realize that not everything should be shared with the public.

So with such instances and the fact that some people posts very unnecessary things that most times don't even relate to their dreams, or the company's goal as regards the kind of employees they want to have, I don't see anything wrong with them asking to check their social media accounts before employment will be given out.

I for one wouldn't want to just join trends and upload what's not related to what I do or unnecessary things that will only draw all sorts of attention including the bad ones, so I'll gladly share my handles with a company if it's my dream job. This wouldn't be the case for many as they feel it's their privacy, a privacy that's public lol or they know the kind of things they do post.

Companies asking for such detail before employment is a sign for the public to know better ways to handle their social media accounts even if they are celebrities online. Well, I want to believe that anyone who really has a dream job that's very realistic will act more cautiously to get it, there's no point posting unnecessary things online if you have a good focus on what you want and how to get it.

I think our personal life should have nothing to do with professional life. But I think some company check the background of an employ for political reason and I can understand that. And I think everything is not for share in social media.

Yeah, you're right to think all that. The bottom line is, we be mindful of what we share on social media

It is important that people are mindful of what they post on social media. It helps both for security reasons and to maintain a good image.
It's sad that some people don't think having a good image is important until they loose a job because of social media image and begin to cry. Companies should do this check, especially for big companies else you may loose millions for employing someone who would not have brought much to the table.

Prople who find it an issue for companies to behave that way to social accounts, are those who need to know that they have to be mindful of what they share on their social account.

I feel thought and perception changes with time. In fact, people can be very perfect online and the opposite physically or ideological. Vetting social media handles is good but of a little good because I can go and scrub any post that might be deemed negative and my employer would marvel at my clean slate.

Lol very true, it's a fact there.

We need to be careful of things we upload on our social media page because anyone can see them and take actions on it like the case of the guy you shared.

Overalls our social media shouldn't be use anyhow to avoid issues that'll put our job and potential ones in danger.

Yeah, that case was actually an unexpected one. I've never imagined such to happen.

I also think there's nothing wrong with companies going their employees social media account. For one, they're the faces of the company and they have to represent well. That's why it's good to watch what you post

Yeah, it's important for both the company and for those who work in it.

This is the issue, many exposed their live to the public through unnecessary updates on socials. As there are good people on socials, there are also bad people so we should be mindful. It's best to keep our life private because of the kind of world we live in today

Yeah, we really need to be careful.

You're right, I won't mind companies to check their employees social media handles and also we should be careful with what we post online because people we think are our friends might be our enemies.

I don't mind either, it's a good one to decide the character of their workers in the future.

I think I understood your point here, but can you remember this saying "when one wakes up is their morning".
Someone maybe have lived an awkward social media live before and it happens that he or she changed for real "changed" and now looking for Job. What do you think about such a person..?? Should his or her previous social media life prevent him from getting the job. In general what will you suggest here??

Is it impossible to erase whatever he thinks would hold him back from getting the job? I doubt that. There should options to delete old posts or create a new accounts and be right with it

Ohh that's a great one..

I see how social media has become such a huge part of our lives, and it’s true that many people don’t realize how much they reveal online.

I think it’s a good reminder for us to think twice before posting anything. It’s not just about privacy but also about how it could affect opportunities in the future.
