Little crime & sin

Greetings!

When we talk about crime, the nearest common thing that comes to my mind is SIN. Sin here aligns with religious beliefs, and it is not just based on one religion; I am sure all religions have things they frown upon.

Just as we believe in the religious sector, there are different sins said to have been mentioned by God from those days of old, as we see in the Bible(for Christian religion). One of the greatest sins people are not allowed to commit is killing humans. If they do, God frowns upon them, and they also face judicial consequences by humans on earth.

My first point is this: even though killing is against the law, there are people who are allowed to kill. An example of such people is soldiers who go to war and kill enemies. Now, the law sees this act as acceptable, and there is nothing wrong with it. This means it is actually a sin, but to some people, it is not a sin. In fact, it is their duty to kill people.

Why all this?

The truth is that what we know as crime today is basically people's opinions and suggestions for keeping the earth safe. Permit me to also say that what we read or learn in religious houses as sin is basically human opinion and suggestions. You do not believe? Okay, why are some religions okay with killing people while others frown upon it?

Which crime do I think can be committed and justifiable?

As to what we believe in the religious world, all sin is measured as the same. However, practically speaking, humans have come to understand that some crimes are bigger than others. But even with this understanding, as long as the crime causes havoc to society or human life and feelings, I think all crimes should be measured the same. However, we cannot just have it that way in this world. Yes, that is how the world is designed.

Three years ago (2022), I was working in a food company. One afternoon, there were loud noises outside, as if a riot was happening on the road. Out of curiosity, we rushed out to see what was going on. Upon getting there, we saw a young man of about 30 years with a big tyre around his neck. The police were already there with their guns, and the loud shouts were a result of the police preventing the crowd from burning the man on the spot (jungle justice).

What did the man do? He had tried to hijack money from a lady who had just come out of a bank, but he failed before the alarm was raised.

How much was the woman with? It was less than 50,000 naira. That is how close the man came to being burned alive if the police had not come to his rescue.

I felt for the man. His cries and tears were pitiable, and I kept imagining what actually lured him into attempting to steal the money. It could be that he was hungry, or it could also be that he needed the money to cater to the hospital bills of a loved one.

To me, crimes like petty stealing that are not so harmful to humans, and do not result in the loss of life, should be pardoned when critically considering what pushed the person to commit such a crime.

I drop my pen here.

Thanks for reading.
