Hello Hive Community,
It's your girl Divine popularly called @jachy.
Today let's dive into the medical line, I would love to talk about a very interesting topic that involves your emotions, anxiety, and many more.
The topic is ....... (drum rolls) ...
HYPOTHALAMUS
The hypothalamus which means "under the thalamus", is located within the brain, below your thalamus, and above your pituitary gland.
It is a link between your endocrine system and your nervous system. Your hypothalamus keeps your body balanced in a stable state called HOMEOSTASIS.
The function of the hypothalamus is secreting hormones, maintaining daily physiological cycles, controlling appetite, managing sexual behavior, regulating emotional responses, and regulating body temperature.
Also, the hypothalamus has a very important role in the menstrual cycle. The regular monthly flow of a woman can be affected if her hypothalamus is affected as well. Some ladies may miss their period for a particular month, but it doesn't mean they are pregnant or infected.
Yes, the infection can be the cause as well but it can also be due to hormonal imbalance which burst down to the hypothalamus which secretes hormones. A woman might have overstressed her brain in that particular month which might cause her to miss her period for that month. So, ladies reduce stress.
Another important aspect of the hypothalamus is the key that turns our emotions into physical responses. Anger, excitement, fear, or stress are all responses generated in reaction to thoughts, impulses, or stimuli in our surroundings. For instance, the hypothalamus makes your heart rate speed up when afraid.
Moreso, the hypothalamus is responsible for sleep and wake cycles. Yeah, surprising right....the urge to sleep is controlled by your hypothalamus and even walking up. Hunger and thirst are also controlled by your hypothalamus. The ability to sense that you are hungry or thirsty is where the hypothalamus comes in. It's just like an ALERT.
WHAT HAPPENS IF YOUR HYPOTHALAMUS IS DAMAGED?
- Insomnia (lack of sleep)
- Mood disorder
- Body temperature fluctuations
- Delayed puberty.
- Weight loss or gain
- Imbalance menstrual cycle
- Muscle loss and weakness.
- Frequent use of the toilet.
- Genetic Disorder (growth).
These are what happens if your hypothalamus is damaged.
Just a little correction, you already know the hypothalamus controls emotions such as love, hate, etc. It controls your feelings too. So do not say" I love you from the bottom of my heart" cause the heart only pumps blood, you say I LOVE YOU FROM THE BOTTOM OF MY HYPOTHALAMUS.
I hope you all learned something from today's medical session. Thank you and see you in my next session.
Hehehe, I learnt all that in school. This whole stuff left my head after secondary school. Thanks for reminding me Divine.
You welcome
Haha, imagine; I am saying this to a lady that doesn't understand medical terms 😂. Thanks for educating me about Hypothalamus
