The Great flood: A mix of disaster and "The Matrix"

  I came back, and I watched a couple of movies during the trip. Most of them I watched during my flights. The first movie that I was curious about was "The Great Flood". It is a Korean production from Netflix, and somehow, it was a surprising development. I started watching it thinking that it was just a disaster movie like "2012" or "The Day After Tomorrow", but yeah, it wasn't, maybe just in the first hour of the movie?

  The pure disaster part of the movie happens mostly in the first hour of the movie, but the total length is almost 2h. So yeah, after the whole world end, the second part of the movie begins, which we get some "The Matrix" elements in that, and it creates some questions about the story. Especially the main question that we understand a bit in the end is how much of the first part of the movie was real.

  The plot is quite explored in some other disaster movies. Asteroids hit Antarctica, and that makes the ice melt, creating the flood. We learn that the main character (An-na), despite looking like a regular woman protecting her child, is in reality involved in a big AI project to develop emotions in computers. And actually her project was part of a preparation to save humanity by creating new humans based on AI, since politicians knew about the coming disaster and humanity was doomed to end.

  We learn that her actual child was killed in a car accident and she participated in the creation of her second version of the child. So in reality, she is trying to save already a clone/machine from her child since the beginning. But in the end the company is responsible for the computer that would generate new humans at the end of the life of this clone and gets the code so it can be inputed in this big computer that is located in space. After the world colapsed An-na is sent to space but she got killed when her spaceship get hit by asteroids. After that, the scenes in the diaster becomes to repeat on and on, and we saw in the end that is all part of the big computer processing emotions testing its code until the perfect human emotions get ready.

  We understand that it is a simulation that in every trial, An-na appears with a shirt with a different number (the number of tests). And after the last successful test, the computer creates children and adults based on An-na and her child. So the movie brings the aspect of how emotions are difficult and the love between mother and child can be replicated by computers, but after so many tests. So I think the movie was creative to mix a disaster movie and "The Matrix" aspect, in this case, however, the AI machine was playing for us humans to make us go back to a destroyed planet.

  Voltei e assisti a alguns filmes durante a viagem. A maioria deles eu assisti durante os voos. O primeiro filme que me deixou curioso foi "The Great Flood". É uma produção coreana da Netflix e, de alguma forma, foi uma surpresa. Comecei a assistir pensando que seria apenas um filme de desastre como "2012" ou "O Dia Depois de Amanhã", mas não era, talvez só na primeira hora do filme?

  A parte do filme que se passa em meio ao desastre acontece principalmente na primeira hora, mas a duração total é de quase 2 horas. Então, sim, depois do fim do mundo, a segunda parte do filme começa, com alguns elementos de "Matrix", o que levanta algumas questões sobre a história. Principalmente a principal, que entendemos um pouco no final, é o quanto da primeira parte do filme foi real.

  O enredo é bastante explorado em outros filmes de desastre. Asteroides atingem a Antártida, causando o derretimento do gelo e a inundação. Descobrimos que a personagem principal (An-na), apesar de parecer uma mulher comum protegendo seu filho, está na verdade envolvida em um grande projeto de IA para desenvolver emoções em computadores. E, na verdade, seu projeto fazia parte de uma preparação para salvar a humanidade criando novos humanos baseados em IA, já que os políticos sabiam do desastre iminente e da extinção da humanidade.

  Descobrimos que seu filho de verdade morreu em um acidente de carro e que ela participou da criação de sua segunda versão da criança. Na realidade, ela está tentando salvar um clone/máquina de seu filho desde o início. Mas, no fim, a empresa é responsável pelo computador que geraria novos humanos ao final da vida útil desse clone e obtém o código para que ele possa ser inserido nesse grande computador localizado no espaço. Após o colapso do mundo, An-na é enviada para o espaço, mas morre quando sua nave espacial é atingida por asteroides. Depois disso, as cenas do desastre se repetem incessantemente, e vemos no final que tudo faz parte do grande computador processando emoções, testando seu código até que as emoções humanas perfeitas estejam prontas.

  Entendemos que se trata de uma simulação, na qual, em cada teste, An-na aparece com uma camisa com um número diferente (o número de testes). E após o último teste bem-sucedido, o computador cria crianças e adultos com base em An-na e seu filho. Assim, o filme aborda a complexidade das emoções e como o amor entre mãe e filho pode ser replicado por computadores, mas somente após inúmeros testes. Acredito que o filme foi criativo ao misturar um filme de desastre com elementos de "Matrix", neste caso, porém, a máquina de IA estava manipulando-nos, humanos, para nos fazer retornar a um planeta destruído.
