Academics Turn Me Off

Hi, I was studying for my exam tomorrow and something hit me. And I thought I should talk about it. Well before that I should give some context. I was studying natural language processing. And this is a course from my University degree. It should also be clarified that I am a student of computer science. So this is about computers. And more specifically the topic which I just mentioned is about the AI we use. Stuff like ChatGPT and other LLMs we use. It should be teaching me about how these things work and how they are made and how I can make one my own. Basically learning the inner workings of such groundbreaking innovations.

So what I actually wanted to say is there are so many fascinating things around us. That may or may not be completely related with the things we study or the degree we pursue, but has that ever stopped you from looking into it? Have you enjoyed learning different new things just because they seem interesting? I'm sure many of you have. But learning these things on your own in your own free time doesn't really affect much, but when you have a deadline on it and an exam at the end of it, it certainly starts to feel like a chore for me. I am trying to say that I was always interested in AI and LLMs and how I can place myself within this new frontier and build a career out of it. So now what I'm actually studying and I should be enjoying it right? I also had the same thought that I would enjoy it, but as the academic side of it kicked in, I started to feel the drag. Yes I am still and very much interested in what I just said but when you put a deadline on it and I certainly no longer enjoy. Do any of you have a similar situation? Or is it just me?

I hope none of you are like me. Because in this situation you will never enjoy learning anything because the ones you already don't enjoy are already a chore to learn, and the things you do enjoy starts to get boring as soon as it looks more and more academic. So I hope you all enjoy what you do. Enjoy what you learn. Enjoy your education.
