Bend-down select is a popular slang term in my environment. Students and youths coined the name. It refers to second-handed clothes. These are those materials which are shipped into the borders of Nigeria.
The picture here is one of the bend-down select shops located near my street. The lady who runs the business usually gets those stuffs in bales. They are rumored to be rejected or unwanted clothes which the Americans and British do not have need of anymore. So, some people bundled those clothes in bales and shipped them to Nigeria and other African countries.
The government are not in support of these materials entering the country. So, they make regulations that brand those kinds of materials contrabands.
Contrabands are those items which are not allowed to enter through the border of the country.
The popularity of these materials among Nigerian especially the youths is because they very cheap and affordable. Secondly, they last longer than the news ones made in our country. So, students like going after them.
How we still have them in circulation in Nigeria is because the regulating authorities are corrupt. They could easily collect money from the marketers and allow them to go in with their goods. Smuggling seriously aid this act.
That is our country. We have always grown that way
