From the Mirador de los Jazmines, where these photos were taken, the landscape opens up like a great natural painting: a wide, green valley, surrounded by mountains and dotted with the famous mogotes that rise, in some cases, to about 300 meters high.

These mogotes are very ancient geomorphological formations, shaped over millions of years by the action of water on limestone. Their rounded and isolated shape gives them an almost unique character. Although they seem exclusive to Cuba, similar landscapes exist in regions such as China and the Malay Peninsula, making Viñales part of a much larger natural phenomenon, but with a very distinct identity of its own.

Estos mogotes son formaciones geomorfológicas muy antiguas, modeladas durante millones de años por la acción del agua sobre la roca caliza. Su forma redondeada y aislada les da un carácter casi único. Aunque parecen exclusivos de Cuba, existen paisajes similares en regiones como China y la península de Malaca, lo que convierte a Viñales en parte de un fenómeno natural mucho más amplio, pero con una identidad propia muy marcada.

Beyond what meets the eye, the valley holds immense natural wealth. At least seventeen local endemic plant species have been identified in this region—plants found nowhere else on the planet. In addition, there is a great variety of terrestrial mollusks: approximately 90% of the species present are endemic, with 57% being nationally endemic, 20% regionally endemic, and 13% strictly local. These figures speak volumes about the ecological value of the area.

All this uniqueness has not gone unnoticed. In 1999, the Viñales Valley and much of the surrounding mountain range were declared a National Park of Cuba and, in December of that same year, recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. For those who visit, beyond the titles and statistics, Viñales feels like a living place, where nature and history meet in a balance that deserves to be cared for and respected.

Toda esta singularidad no ha pasado desapercibida. En 1999, el valle de Viñales y gran parte de la sierra que lo rodea fueron declarados Parque Nacional de Cuba y, en diciembre de ese mismo año, reconocidos como Patrimonio Natural de la Humanidad por la UNESCO. Para quien lo visita, más allá de los títulos y las estadísticas, Viñales se siente como un lugar vivo, donde la naturaleza y la historia se encuentran en un equilibrio que merece ser cuidado y respetado.
