Some places don’t need many words to speak. Like this one. They stand in silence, telling their stories through the time and stone.
These three monumental crosses rise above the Andance village in southeastern France, right by the Rhône River. Positioned on a rocky hilltop Châtalet they form a striking silhouette visible from afar, especially when framed by cloudy skies like on the day I was there.
Known locally as LES TROIS CROIX these crosses carry more than just symbolic meaning. According to the local tradition they commemorate the ancient Roman persecutions of early Christians. It is said that the village of Andance received the bodies of three Christian martyrs: Agathon, Orianée and Pompina, who were executed for their faith. The monument stands as a quiet memorial to that legacy and to the many forgotten victims of intolerance and violence throughout history. Today these crosses are mainly sign of Andance.
To my information similar monuments can be found across France and also other parts of Europe, often built as places of prayer, reflection or remembrance. Some were already erected after wars or as votive offerings during epidemics. Others like this one carry the weight of time and devotion, standing as humble but powerful landmarks. .
To reach them I had to climb up the hill (luckily not a very high one) just a few hundred meters above sea level but definitely steep enough to make me catch my breath a few times. 😅
Luckily it was well within my physical limits… and totally worth it! During the walk I could enjoy the panoramic view of the whole village and the river.
But on the top the view opens much more beautifully over the village and the Rhône valley — a peaceful, scenic reward for the effort. Unforgetable! This was one of this moment you are greateful to be in such places like this one.
The light, the stone, the silence — everything came together in that moment. Even the sun came in the right moment.
