Hello Hive!
Let's continue today with my recent collaboration with Egzo aka the Artkemyst.
Mid-november, he came in Nantes to spent a couple of days with me before moving to Paris. It's always special when we meet : it was were we were living both in Paris, and it's still the same now, whatever the distance between us.
Egzo is about to drop a new musical album so he wanted to produce visual content with me, using lightpainting and infrared photography. For that lightpainting serie, I had a specific idea in mind. This is simple but very efficient, according to my opinion. As Egzo's artwork is more and more focused on Nature, it was obvious for me to use vegetation with simple ambient lighting. Doing light calligraphy here would have been really weird and counter-productive.
Egzo is an active beatmaker, painter, rapper, poet, writer, collage artist...his artistical approach is global. XO BEATBOX is his main project so far : he observed that empty cigarette packets are everywhere, as common litter in the streets. He thought about a creative process to turn garbage into piece of art. He started to cover cigarette packets with paint, then he accidently switched to collage when he made a mistake once : he was working on another project including collage and he put a piece of colored paper with glue on a custom cigarette packet. It was the revelation, and everything came naturally after that : association of the XO BEATBOX with his musical production with addition of QR code(s) in each box, series of XO BEATBOX on themes (the Wu-Tang Clan serie was a blast ⚡️✨). Since then, he developped this concept and he experimented a lot of path in the upcycling way.
Since he returned to the French West Indies (=home), his work tells about his bound with family, ancestors, Nature, caribean heritate. "Back to the roots" can sound a bit cliché but it is really the process :
Next time, I'll talk a bit about synesthesia 🔥

Lightpainting is a photographic technique in which exposures are made by moving a hand-held light source while taking a long exposure photograph, either to illuminate a subject or to shine a point of light directly at the camera, or by moving the camera itself during exposure. Nothing is added or removed in post processing.
