Vélez Artisan
Specialty Coffee Shop
Centro Comercial Santafé. Medellín, Colombia

IMG_8576.jpeg

Everybody knows that Colombia is a great reference in terms of coffee, and also that the leather industry is of great importance in the field of fashion and design for the country, but to conceive the union of both worlds under the same brand is something that, at least for me, had never crossed my mind.

The truth is that it is not such a crazy idea when we listen to the history and tradition that accompanies both products. It seems that the brand's goal is to promote the artisanal traditions of Colombians, at least that's what the advertisements and their web page say, inviting you to go to their coffee shop.

However, since I was in curious tourist mode, I asked some locals their opinion on the matter, since there is no lack of coffee shops in Colombia for a fashion brand to decide to promote coffee of origin within the country. I obtained interesting answers that always aimed to open debates on sustainability, corporate image and philanthropy.

To avoid going too far from the objective of this publication, which is to refer to how much I liked the coffee I tasted that day, I will limit myself to mention that it is well known in Colombia that the leather industry, which is what the Vélez brand has always been dedicated to, wastes water excessively, uses chemicals that are unfriendly to the ecosystem and is based on animal exploitation. It seems to me that these are enough reasons to feel ashamed, although we know that industries do not withdraw for moral reasons, but they look for ways to evade by promoting social projects, with a more immediate impact, which allows them to be better seen, such as supporting small producers of artisan coffee? Perhaps.

It is difficult to write a gastronomic review after thinking deeply about that. It is likely that if I had been told so many things before, I would not have sat down to have a coffee there, would I? The truth is that I am not going to go moralistic just to look good, when I saw the striking stand of their coffee shop the first thing I felt was the desire to go immediately to try that coffee. Once I checked its high quality and did a little research, I began to wonder if it would have been better to invest that money in some small artisan. However, I think the important thing about this experience was to be able to get to the point of reflecting on this anecdote, if I hadn't found myself in that situation, I doubt I would have been interested in the environmental consequences generated by that particular fashion company. I've never been much of a fashionista.

Anyway, let's talk about coffee. Let ourselves be seduced for a moment by that imperative invitation that we find on the signs outside fashion stores and around their location: "Visit us! And live the experience of our origin coffee".

The small coffee shop I found is located inside the Santafé shopping mall in Medellín, Colombia and almost next to the big clothing and leather goods store of the brand. I wasn't looking for it, but I came across it several times while accompanying some people shopping, until I decided to take a break from the hustle and bustle and sit down to enjoy a delicious coffee, one of my priorities when I visit this wonderful country.

Despite being a small stand, the place has a bar and several small tables around it, so that an estimated 20 people can sit comfortably. The style and decoration in general is very neat, with delicate finishes and a slightly luxurious touch reminiscent of their stores, given by the choice of colors and arrangement of elements.

The first thing that catches the eye are the leather products on display for sale, associated with cooking and coffee. Among them are aprons, T-shirts, tote bags, cup holders, placemats for serving tables and some coffee cups. All products at least with some leather finish, the hallmark of Vélez.

I have to admit that I really liked the apron and the placemats, they have a very nice and sober finish, but I hardly spend money on things just because I find them attractive, unless it's about food of course, so I didn't succumb completely to the charms of the leather industry.

IMG_8561.jpeg

Not everything on display were fashionable products, of course there are packages of Vélez Artisan Café de Origen, a unique variety that is offered in beans or ground and produced in the hacienda La Manchuria, which has its own brand and legacy in the national coffee industry.

They also have a counter with cakes and pastries to accompany the beverage of your choice. The variety of cakes is limited, they only offer the most consumed in the area, which are carrot, chocolate and cheesecake, a safe bet since pastries are not the strong point of the business.

On the tables we found the brief menu with their offer, I had a fleeting moment of excitement when I read, at the end of it, that they had different filtering methods to prepare the coffee: Chemex, Aeropress and V60. But my illusion was brief, because as soon as I pointed out the methods on the small menu, the waiter at the cashier's desk indicated that they did not have any method available at that moment. The disappointment made me forget to ask if it was motivated by something particular at that moment or if they were thinking of discontinuing it.

In spite of everything the workers providing the service were very friendly and helpful, they told us about the drinks they were preparing, explaining how they made them and the importance of each component. The barista knew what he was doing, not only by telling us about the coffee he was preparing, but also by demonstrating it after it was prepared, as it tasted very good.

IMG_8568.jpeg

In the end I ordered an American coffee (1,80 €) and one of my companions a cappuccino (2,00 €), prepared quite correctly in an automatic espresso machine Wega, Italian brand.

What always takes me by surprise when I order a coffee prepared in automatic machines, is the high temperature at which it is served. I am so used to the friendly temperatures with which filter coffees are prepared, that I forgot to avoid immediately putting the coffee that was delivered to my mouth. I got burned, of course, but not for the first time that way, so I made a note to remember to take care of the temperatures before attending my enthusiasm.

The good taste of the coffee and the quality of the beans they use is indisputable, I really liked the coffee I ordered, I even considered repeating immediately, because it was not enough in quantity, but due to time constraints it wasn't possible.

Price, despite seeming quite correct, is above the average value of coffee in Colombia, I would say that it costs up to triple, something that wouldn't have seemed so bad if it were a full-fledged specialty coffee shop, with coffee of different origins, profiles and local producers; but it was not the case, they only have the grain packaged for their seal and I lacked more information about the characteristics and cultivation of coffee.

In fact with this experience alone, without trying to investigate by other means or deduce according to taste, I could not guarantee whether it was Arabica or Robusta coffee, something as elementary as that was not documented in any space, and I emphasize this, because I assumed that it was a specialty coffee shop, where those details are usually everywhere. I was probably confused from the start by the methods offered and the number of times I read artisans in their advertisements. I would define it as a simpler coffee shop, at least for now that it is in its beginnings.

Inquiring a little about La Manchuria, the company in charge of producing and roasting coffee for Vélez, I found out that they grow Arabica coffee in the Andes mountain range, at a very good altitude, and that they are also a coffee reserve with a farm that promotes agro-ecological tourism. It would be interesting to make a visit and ask them a little about the collaboration with Vélez.

Before I sat down to drink this coffee, fleeing from last minute purchases that I usually don't like at all, it hadn't crossed my mind that this little cup of coffee was going to give me so many things to reflect on and question myself about. What I did think when I ordered it was that I would like to keep a picture with the cute apron that I wasn't going to buy but that tried to seduce me. Cheers to self-control!

Oh what a pretty and elegant place to have a cup of coffee in! I would definitely like a visit, despite the tripled price. :D I guess some places make up in charm what they lack in quality beans, huh? So so lovely seeing you around, lovely! Big hug!

It's a very flashy coffee shop to be passed off, however the coffee they make is pretty good, no variety, but quality. It felt like real coffee, if that makes any sense hahaha.

Oh thank you very much for coming to greet me, I hope to make time to hang out more often and share a few coffees around here, it's not that I lack the desire or material hahaha.

Hugs well received and returned with much love 🥰☕️

I'll never say no to a free coffee, but c'mon! next time no milk! 🤣 just joking!

Sure guys, it's always a pleasure to read about coffees around the world and exchange experiences in the community. Have no doubt on that. 😉

I love a good cup of coffee. Don't know that one, but a friend from Colombia brought me some Juan Valdez, and it was soooo good! Enjoy!

I think that's what it's all about when we have coffee, taking some time to reflect and see those things that we don't usually notice sometimes, it's still a nice place, greetings

I am delighted that you have shared with everyone your experience in this pleasant visit to the land of coffee. As you rightly mention Colombia is a good coffee reference and has excellent beans to give us a unique experience in our lives.
It is curious the combination of fashion and coffee, but without a doubt it is a good hook for all those who love both options as is your case 😉
I loved the photos and I agree with you on the high price
A hug 😘 🤗 🤗

Almost all commercial brands commit certain abuses and well, sometimes it is difficult to know what they are, even more so when you suddenly come across a visually attractive stand. I like the way it looks, plus the desserts look delicious. In particular, I like that the coffee prepared in special machines is boiling XD. I know it's a risk for my tongue (sometimes I burn myself, XD) but it's a habit inherited from my parents.

How cool that you had that experience. I send you a hug from afar!

Only Nina can write a huge post about a specific coffee! 😃 After checking out the post, even for me who is not a coffee drinker, I want to have a cup of THAT coffee right now! 😂

I agree!😂

Este post parece un trabajo de investigación. 😂

Hello! Interesting story that you share with us. At one time I remember writing a post where I recognized the importance of the origin of each coffee shop to expose as you have done, I congratulate you. Unfortunately here in Venezuela many open stores but without a history to back them up. At least that has been my experience when I have asked.

It is incongruous the theme of the coffee shop and on the other hand the shocking message of the leather industry. I am a lover and defender of nature, therefore, I do not share the company's philosophy either. Thank you for sharing your excellent post. Regards.

Hola!

Love the café's offerings, the ambiance of the location. Collaboration with La Manchuria for coffee production seems like a good way to go. It's like coffee, fashion, and sustainability are meant to feel like it's personalized for me to be drawn into the post. 😚
