Perfecting Plunger Coffee

in Cinnamon Cup Coffee4 years ago (edited)

Simple it may seem to use, the little coffee plunger, but surprised was I that our friend the coffee lover had no clue where to start when it came to making a cup of plunger coffee.

Picture1.jpg

We had taken ourselves down to the stunning Western Cape for a week long breakaway last year, this was pre-Covid-hard-lockdown that we didn't see coming at that stage!

I packed my little coffee plunger wrapped up like a precious little babe in between my clothes, as we had booked a self-catering holiday and I wasn't taking any chances that we'd find ourselves with nothing to make a decent cup of coffee!

Instant coffee I cannot drink, no matter that it's been extracted from the very best coffee beans!

An unashamed coffee snob am I!

A mess our friend made when he got up very early on the first morning to make himself a cup of coffee - coffee grinds and scalding hot water splashed everywhere with very little coffee left inside the plunger!

Just goes to show that having a coffee machine certainly doesn't teach you how to make a good cup of coffee as everything is automated.

Coffee Plunger aka French Press

Whoever invented this simple concept was brilliant, as the humble coffee press can produce aromatic full-bodied cups of brewed coffee provided you're using freshly ground coffee, filtered water and the correct method; something I will show you here.

Coffee Beans ripening, just waiting to be picked and taken through the long process from fermenting to eventually being roasted so that we can enjoy a good cuppa to start our days!

Having your own coffee grinder of course will produce a brilliant cup of coffee but if you don't, make sure the ground coffee you buy is fresh.

Plunger Coffee making

Rinse plunger in boiling water, then measure ground coffee into the base of the plunger -

  • 15g coarsely ground Coffee per 250ml Filtered Water

Pour a little cold water onto the ground coffee and let it rest about a minute or so while you get the cups ready; this blooms the coffee and prevents it being scalded.

Pour boiling water on top, give it a stir, place plunger lid on top but let it rest for approx 4 minutes before pressing slowly all the way to the bottom, ensuring that the vents on the lid is exposed.

Serve immediately with hot or cold milk, coffee creamer or frothed milk, or have it black as some say that is the only way to really taste the coffee.

I enjoy my morning cuppa with coffee creamer as the addition of milk weakens the flavour. I enjoy it accompanied by homemade rusks which is a typical South African treat, similar to Biscotti, but not as sweet.

This cup had a deliciously creamy froth on top; homemade cappuccino I call it;)

So before I settle down to enjoy my cup of plunger coffee, I will end off by sharing two gorgeous Cappuccinos from the Cowshed Coffee & Pottery Shop down on the Kwazulu Natal South Coast.

I hope this brief description of how to make a good cup of plunger coffee will help you enjoy your next cuppa :)

A french press makes the richest, most delicious coffee. We have one but I typically make my morning cup using this contraption:

That's an interesting coffee maker Eric, thanks so much for sharing and for visiting!
One could actually write a very long blog about all kinds of coffee makers judging from some shared here and what I have at the back of my kitchen cupboards!
I've just had my morning coffee so am ready to face this Saturday; going to be a hot one though 😉
Enjoy your weekend my friend.
PS I'm so glad I have Mindful Moments here, been a huge help as the last month has been really trying with Mom and the ankle. I tend to neglect self-care and Chapter four has been most valuable, we cannot help anyone if we don't take care of our own well-being, and I have to remind myself of that all the time, so thank you for that Eric!

I even have a travel version of this that I bring with me. As much as I love Europe sometimes I get tired of those little coffees (espressos) they serve. Lol. When will the cooler weather come? We're supposed to hit 60 degrees (F) today. My wife and I are planning on getting the new ebikes out. I actually got a sunburn a few days ago, we stayed out on them longer than we planned. You're welcome! I'm happy to hear Mindful Moments is working for you, Lizelle. I've been donating copies of the book to Little Free Libraries scattered throughout the neighborhood in hopes that they'll find the people who need them right now. Stay cool and enjoy the rest of your weekend!

Wonderful to hear it's warming up on your side of the world Eric, we need some of the cold to come this way;)
Enjoy cycling and getting sunburn 🥵
I know what you mean about those little cups of espresso, it just doesn't do it for me!
That's so very kind of you to donate some of copies of your book, I believe there are many 'lost' people in today's world.
Enjoy the rest of your weekend my friend.

You're welcome @lizelle
Thanks for subscribing 😊 and please feel free to drop by anytime 🤗

I remember that day at the coffee farm, it was such a lovely outing, I love my coffee plunger, and the aroma of fresh grinded coffee beans, lovely post @lizelle , well done.

It was a very special day indeed, brought back lovely memories going through my photos😍
Thank you for popping in my friend!

I live in a country in which coffee beans in the number 1 export.
Unfortunately, I'm no coffee lover.. ha ha
But they don't use coffee plunger instead they call it a coffee strainer.
After the coffee drips down onto the glass, the locals will pour the coffee into the glass filled with ice.
Iced coffee is the number 1 favourite for the locals - they drink it from morning till night

IMG_20190708_133823.jpg

That's an interesting coffee maker @ireenchew! You must have the opportunity of seeing the process from bean to the cup at some of the coffee farms?
I love an iced coffee but my favourite is more like a thick coffee milkshake 😉
It's funny, up till my early 20s, I never enjoyed coffee, but now can't start the day without it!
Thank you for stopping by, it's always lovely seeing you here, Mom of a 16 year old😉🤩

Hmmmmmm! Now I need a coffee. Going to go make one! We spoilt ourselves with a Nespresso machine at the end of last year and got an electric milk fritter during lockdown so now we invest in good pods. But this weekend we had guests over and use the plunger and boy did we need help!!! This post would have been so useful last week 😂. I didn’t know about the cold water on the coffee grounds before the hot water! So interesting!!

Ok! I’m ready!
img_4285.heic

Just finished my morning cuppa, I know it's still very early but I have to help Mom so I no longer sleep in, not a good morning person but the thought of that aromatic cup of coffee does help😉
I discarded all my coffee machines but a Nespresso and an electric milk frother would be most welcome in my kitchen!
I learned about the cold water trick on a tv show and didn't quite believe it but it does make sense that the coffee grounds will burn and surprising how that cold water extracts the best flavour from the coffee.
I'll join you and have another cup of coffee now, thanks for the visit @zo3d 🙂

Ok need fo of quick before loadshedding!!!!

This darn loadshedding is such a pain, plus it's going to be a hot hot day; ours will go off from 16:00 - 18:00 so I'm thinking a good old fashioned cold meats & salad will be ideal for suppertime 😉

Good idea! Ours is 8-10.30am so I’ve just filled the hot water urn for more tea later.

@lizelle, those coffees from the pottery house were works of art.
But I know you, I have seen how beautiful YOU jazz up a cuppa.😁

Thank you but it's nothing like these @farm-mom, how nice seeing you here 😉
Are you still in Florida? I must pop over to your blog and see what you and @thebigsweed have been up to!
It's still sooo hot here, can't wait for autumn to arrive!
Enjoy your weekend dear @farm-mom 🤩

Good morning @lizelle, we got back home a week ago, just in time to tap our maple trees.
The sap is running now and maple syrup is on it's way.
We had a wonderful trip and we could have stayed longer, since we pulled into the driveway with a foot and half of snow still on the ground. 🙄 @thebigsweed looked at me and said "Let's turn around". But there has been a warming trend the last few days and the white stuff is slowly going away.
Hope it cools off for you and heats up for us.
Enjoy your day!

Haha, we need some of that white stuff on this side of the world @farm-mom, I can just imagine how you felt driving into the cold!
I'm fascinated with how you tap the maple syrup, saw @thebigsweed's post when I was half asleep, must head on over there and see if he explains how it's done?
Back to the grindstone now but I'm sure it's one you love!

Hey there @lizelle, we were just talking this morning about how our Spring is your fall. My hubby, the constant teacher explained to me all about the earth's rotation, longitude and latitude, the equator and the prime meridian.
I love when he spouts off with all his knowledge. I never interrupt him when he gets going, even though most of what he's saying I already know. hehe.

Maple syrup making is so much fun. It takes 50 gallons of sap to make 1 gallon of syrup, so collecting from the maple trees after tapping gets us outside and walking through the forest, it's nice.
Then the "cooking" gets done outside on a big wood burning contraption the sweed made specifically for the job. It's always a relaxing day together, sometimes the adult beverages come out too!

Fresh coffee bean flavour is the best, have not seen a sturdy plunger like that in some time @lizelle I rely on a coffee machine for the family or small one cup brew on the gas stove for a single cuppa.

It is the aroma filling the home first thing in the morning, good kick start to any day.

That nice coffee plunger broke can you believe it! The glass always is so fragile, I could have cried when it happened as it was the perfect size for us!
But you're right, nothing beats the aroma coming from the kitchen when making coffee with fresh coffee grounds, it's just awesome!
Mom woke me up early for the looloo run so I guess it's off to the kitchen I go for a good cuppa to start the day.
Thanks for the visit Joan, have a fabulous weekend 😀

Mmmh, my kind of coffee, just black please... 😊

Haha, you caught me out, had to edit the post as I know of many coffee lovers who have theirs black as that preserves the real coffee flavour they say, and I believe it but I like mine a little softer on the palate. Lovely seeing you here my friend, how are the BISS crowd doing? It's time I got myself into gear and make a decent sandwich worthy of a photo again😉
Thank you for the visit my friend🤗

If you want it softer, go for the sugar and chocolate... 😁 It's always a pleasure to read your posts and for BISS, yeah, not too sure where this is going. smirk. But definitely looking forward to see your march Sandwich... Thanks for being you!

great post. I could almost smell the ground coffee in the photos. It's evening here and I'm on the beer but this has me wishing for tomorrow morning. mmmm coffee

Hope you got your coffee @scubahead, it's early morning here and time for coffee so very soon the house will be filled with the aroma of coffee😉
Thanks for popping in.

Mmmm I just want one of these now......I love a GOOD cup of coffee!

Nothing like a good cup of coffee to perk one up not so, thank you for popping in for a cuppa, it's nice meeting you @the-busy-bee :)
