UNPLUGGED: Away From My Addiction

Hello members of the Digital community, first time writing a post here☺️ Amazing how I relate to this week's prompt which is:

What Happens When You Unplug? Have you ever been in a situation where you had to go without your phone, laptop, or even TV for a long time? Maybe it was a power outage, a personal choice, or just bad luck. Share what it felt like and what you did to pass the time. If you've never experienced it, imagine what it would be like and how you would cope.

People usually ask me, How long can you stay away from your phone? I think this question comes up because I am always on my phone. This is mainly because I have 60 - 70 percent of my daily activities linked to either my mobile phone or my laptop. So I am always active on these devices and they are always with me.

I have always been cautious when it comes to my phone, since my high school days, that was the first time I owned a phone. Whenever I go out, I make sure my phone is always secured. I try to avoid places where I know my phone could easily be snatched from me, cause I didn’t know what I would do if I ever lost my phone.

Well, in 2020, I think I finally knew what I would do if I ever lost my phone. It was during the COVID-19 period. When we had the Corona outbreak in Nigeria. Schools were asked to close and also movements were restricted, especially in places with large numbers of people, to avoid the spread of the virus.

During the beginning of the lockdown, my phone got stolen, I wasn’t careless cause I know that when it comes to my devices, I am always careful. My family got robbed and my phone and my dad’s laptop were stolen, with other valuables. I cried out my eyes cause I kept asking myself how I would survive this lockdown with no phone.

It was so terrible for me because I needed to know what was happening online, with the corona and also communicate with friends from school and get on with the trends. I was at the mercy of listening to the latest happenings from my siblings or neighbors. It was a tough month for me.

To reduce my boredom and frustration, I found solace in my books. Good thing I bought new books while I was returning from school so I had to bury myself in those books. At a point I kept pressuring my dad to get me a phone cause it was more than a month already and I felt like I was away from the happenings of the world and I was on an island.

I was so happy when few weeks after much pressure my dad came in with a new device for me, I was able to get back a few numbers and keep myself updated. It wasn’t easy staying without it for more than a month.

Ever since 2020, I don’t think I have spent a long time without my devices and I do not plan on doing that. Even when there’s a bad service provider, I make sure I have a substitute service provider to help me stay connected. I can’t say I envy people who could go months or weeks without their devices because I love to have mine with them. Without it, I feel like I am disconnected from the society. Sometimes, I take a break from my phone but not for a long time. I share an attachment with my phone, good thing I make money with it.
