Thinking about an SUV as a home + solar powered energy for heating (2022.03.17)

in Proof of Brain3 years ago

I am thinking more and more about buying and living in a SUV to avoid having to pay rent and regular monthly bills. I have seen some people on YouTube, who do this.

My current detailed plan for the next winter:
An SUV, solar panel/panels, battery/batteries, charging controller, inverter (12V <> 230V), and some kind of electric heater. Preferably a low cost, small, low energy consuming heater. Theoretically I do not need a huge heater to heat the back of an SUV, where I would mostly stay, including sleeping.

If one battery would drain, then I could use another one, while the solar panel/panels would charge the other. Or I could use multiple simultaneously.

Theoretically this would lead to (close to) free living. Probably the batteries need a replacement from time to time, but no other serious expenses. I mean nothing that could make living on my low (approximately $250 USD per month) pension-like income impossible. So I would have a free life.

And the SUV could be in the middle of the forest/field.

What do you think about this? Do you have any personal experience with any of these? Do you have any suggestion, recommendation or advice?

Thank you.

I took this photo today afternoon (at 14:46 CET) with my smartphone (Samsung Galaxy A12). I have not edited this photo.

No experience myself but it sounds interesting :) Less comfort but much more freedom. Good luck with this plan!

Thank you for the support. I am still thinking and planning, but I have eight or nine months before the next winter, so I have (hopefully enough) time to find a good solution.

There is better suited vans with off road capabilities.

I have a Jeep and it's smaller than you think inside.

If you camp on the roof of the SUV maybe, but with a van you can camp on the roof and have a living room + kitchen inside the van with your valuables locked up under you.

I know that an SUV is smaller than a van, but also much cheaper. At least nowadays where I live (in Hungary). Nowadays I am thinking mostly about a Land Rover. I saw people on YouTube, who live in a Land Rover full time. Kitchen is a kind of luxury that I do not have even nowadays in my current rent. Running water (tap water) also.

Living in a Car? Man its not that comfortable and romantic as it sounds i guess...

But if its your Dream, just go for it !

Why people think that this is my dream?

Not my dream, but my goal, because I do not have any other choice. I cannot afford my rent in the winter, and I cannot make a living with Hive, because I am earning mostly cents with my posts/comments. And I cannot (and I do not even want to) expect other people to pay (even a part) of my rent/bills.

It would be very good to maintain this rent in the winter, but financially I cannot afford it. I live under the local minimum wage in Hungary.

Thank you for the support.

To other people: See? I am not complaining. I am writing down the truth. And just/only the truth. Even if some people might not believe me.

All the best in whatever you do! :)

Thank you. I hope that I will find a good solution in time.

Do you have a driver's license? If not, is this legal where you live? Even if you wouldn't be driving it, here, I think you would need a license, but maybe I am wrong and maybe you have one in any case.

It is legal to own a car in my country (in Hungary) without having a driver's license. You can even drive it off-road and in private properties. You need to have a driver's license to legally drive it on public roads/streets. If you do it without having a driver's license, then you break the rules. Currently it is not a crime, but rule breaking, and the police can fine you. It is up to their consideration. Many people drive without a driver's license.

I currently do not have a driver's license.

Have a nice day. All the best. Greetings and much love from Hungary.

I wish you the best luck! I strongly believe you can do it but have you ever thought of staying at some corner of airport to avoid the freezing winter?

Corner of airport? What do you mean?

My partner and I did sleep in a bench of airport that camera not reach us so we were not been kicked out. We did few times when we traveled in short budgets. So I think if winter is so fierce in your place, you can try to spend few nights in the local airport to save the heating bill.

I like the idea of vanlife. Just a medium size, something in decent shape. If youre able to build somethings it would help. Or to insulate it. Its expensive of course to outfit it though. Depends what you can get. Would be nice if you can find one thats already built, but just little older.

Depends what you can get.

Hopefully something good. I saw a few Land Rover SUVs for sale in my area in the recent past. Most of them are in very good condition, but they are very expensive. They are around $2000 USD. Currently financially I cannot afford them. But anything can happen before the next winter (in the next eight or nine months).

Based on what I saw and what I heard so far, Land Rovers are very good SUVs. I saw people on YouTube, who live in them full time.

Thank you for the support.

That sounds challenging, but it might be a practical solution to your problems. If you somehow manage to keep posting on Hive within the SUV/Van life, maybe it will help to improve your fortune?

If I can earn enough to buy an SUV, then I will certainly keep posting about it daily. Nowadays the cheapest, but working SUV is around $2000 USD, while an RV is around $3000 USD, so an SUV is approximately $1000 USD cheaper than an RV. And a good and small sailboat is also around $2000 USD.

If I could earn a proper income with Hive, then I could maintain a sailboat, but otherwise an SUV is a better solution, because I could maintain it, even on my low, pension-like income for my multiple disabilities, which is approximately only $250 USD per month.

Thank you for the support.
