He had now arrived. Made money. He had a point to prove. Growing up, he was surrounded by poverty. He felt left out of the good stuff. His choice of friends were limited. He remembered a particular episode when he went to a classmate’s home and how the parents had treated him. It damaged his psyche. But the poor boy was now a millionaire. The world had to hear of his wealth.

He met a classmate that came from the butter family back then. He evaluated him as someone struggling. He got himself invited to the friend’s home. The old classmate would be his broadcaster. The one that would announce his wealth.

On the day, he picked his best car. His jewelry. His outfit. He was going to oppress. He got to the home of the friend. He was slightly happy the classmate was unable to live in Ikoyi or VI. The people he looked up to to then. The second thing was the simplicity of his classmate’s home. So he came in loud.

Had lunch. Boasted of his many successes. His finances and let it be known that he was now a man of means. His friend was suitably awed and remarked how proud he was of his attainments. When it was time to leave, he opened his bag, called the wife of his friend, gave her money. Called the children and gave them money. Plenty of it. He saw that the kids said thank you and dropped the money on a table.

The wife smiled at him. As he left, his friend saw him to the car. He was waiting for the right noise on the car. The friend seemed not to notice it. Try as he might, it did not happen. No admiration or negative feeling. He patted his friend on the back and wished him well.

The classmate entered his home, called the wife and together they prayed for his departed friend. That God should touch him to understand the meaning of wealth and how to use it. He also thanked God for blessing his friend. And prayed for more of his classmates to succeed.

The final thing the classmate did that day was to sign a cheque equivalent to the price of the car his classmate had brought to oppress him. The cheque was made out to three orphanages he supported.

The financial gifts from his classmate he put in envelopes for some people that had approached him for help. He was not second generation wealth, he was fifth. He did not care to oppress. He saw nothing wrong with big cars or mansions. It was not just his style.

The oppressor got home disappointed. What did he need to do to get applause and recognition? He is not a very happy person, despite his success. His need for validation took joy away from him.
