Namaste hivers,
Hope you are having a good time(if not, this post may help you realise 'why'). Each generation of humans has its own challenges. While survival from war or ensuring steady supply of food were the issues grappling previous generations, the Gen Z seems to be struggling with mental health. Technological advancement brought radical reforms in every sector and it was predicted that people will be more happy as machines will take up the tedious work and humans will be more free to enjoy their lives. However, this seems to be a mirage as improved living standards did not bring the much anticipated contentment. So what went wrong ? Was it all a big lie or some deep state conspiracy ? Were we fooled ?
As per me, it was the inability to understand our own minds and a mixture of two or more of the following :
Forced commercialisation of humans. In short, the constant societal pressure to do the things that make money. Doing all things with the major intention of monetary benefit from it. This made us abandon the things that we just love doing or worse, we couldn't explore what we love doing.
Competition. To get a better life. Only thing we forget is that 'better' is a comparative word. Better than what ? Neighbour ? Relative ? Friends ? Donald Trump ? A never ending pursuit. Maybe a better approach could have been to get the 'best' life possible.
Societal imitation. Without realising that what works for 'them' may not bring the same result for you. Studying what they study. Wearing what they wear. Eating what they eat. Slowly these habits crept into every sphere of our lives. To the point that we now think how masses think. And social media aggravated it manifold.
And a slew of other directly or indirectly related reasons, each one working in tandem to add fuel to fire. So now, what can we do to have a more content and peaceful life ? Well, I have observed positive results by following these points :
- Exploring a wide range of activities to understand what I just love doing . I travelled to new places, talked to unknown people, made friends from different corners of India; tried my hands at art and craft, made wall designs with paint and mouldings, explored ceiling designs ; studied international relations and geopolitics..I did all these things as I enjoyed doing them. Some of them became my hobbies. And I keep exploring new 'potential hobbies'.
Trying to be best version of myself rather than trying to be better than someone else. As the proverb says " There will always be someone better than you ", why shouldn't we just focus on ourselves and improve what we can ? Comparison is the thief of joy, isn't it ?
Not following whatever the trend is. Not blindly doing all the things other people do. Having an individual opinion and choice is extremely important. What suit others may not suit you ? So, why not do what makes you happy ? Why to allow others' choices dictate your decisions ? Uniformity is not always good.
Thoughts. Our thoughts are not mere bust of neurons wandering here and there. They are the manifestation of our reality. The way we think dictates how we act and react in a situation. Positive and enabling thinking results is favourable outcomes. Be in company of such people and emulate their way of thinking.
