I have been watching the recent developments in the ”Proof of Brain” (POB) tribe with a fair bit of interest.
Since PalNet — the original reason for this account — is really not a creation/curation proposition anymore, I figured I might as well cast about for an alternative. Proof of Brain seemed promising.
Once Upon a Time...
Proof of Brain certainly did take off running... even though my small acount was entirely based on commenting and curating, I managed to build a small stake.
I liked that there was a high level of engagement, and the dialogue was quite intelligent, most of the time.
But something seemed to happen, along the way. Like many promising projects, things gradually seemed to grind to a stop.
VYB... New and Improved?
So now there's going to be this new tribe — or maybe it's just a new coin(?) — called ”Verify Your Brain” (VYB) which is somehow part of, or adjunct to, or parallel to, or separate from the original POB tribe. Or is it coin?
It was with somewhat of a chuckle that I thought to myself "so they're already verifying people's brains by making the system so convoluted and complex as to be virtually incomprehensible!" Unless you have a huge pulsating brain!
I also thought it was a bit amusing that the structure itself is an efficient sorting mechanism, perhaps in a slightly different way: it's not that I'm not capable of understanding how this all works, it's that I don't have a couple of hours of study time lying around to do so.
Software Rules...
It brought me back to a time when I used to work a lot with developers and one of the acid tests for someone who had coded an extremely complicated bit of software was ”can you eloquently explain what it does in 30 seconds or less, so that anybody can understand it, including your grandma?”
There were a lot of epic fails in that particular department, alongside some deep insights when extremely accomplished coders suddenly "really got it" that the rest of the world really doesn't think like they do.
But I digress!
Airdrops, Oh My!
Anyway, what got me excited about this project again was casting an eye on the recent posts concerning the airdrops of VYB tokens to current POB stake holders.
And I was surprised to find myself in the preliminary running to receive an airdrop of 488.2 VYB tokens in spite of the fact that I mostly comment rather than post top level content on POB, and I only have 144 POB tokens staked.
Not that I am looking the proverbial gift horse in the mouth, mind you! It was just a really nice discovery!
Problems... and Solutions?
I have no idea whether this new approach will save POB from itself, or make no difference. And I have no idea whether or not VYB will go anywhere.
What I do like is that there is an attempt at solutions in the works. Too many formerly great projects are allowed to simply atrophy, rather than being revived.
That's one of the cool things about Hive's 2nd layer projects: It can serve as a "sandbox" of sort to experiment with different approaches to community building.
What I really like about the VYB initiative is the focus on long term staking. I'm all in favor of that!
So anyway, it'll be exciting to see what happens, and I look forward to being part of it!

Although that was not our intent, it is a fair criticism!
The length and depth and breadth of the initial white paper was meant to convey the seriousness with which we view openness and transparency regarding what we are doing and what we intend to do.
And White Papers should be that way, carving out every tiny nuance and variation.
I totally get the two tokens part, and the two distinct communities. It's how the two parallel communities communicate with each other I am still learning about, and since I am more of a "paws on" learner, I'm sure that will become more evident once I start using the dual communities.
One of the things I really LIKE about VYB is the automatic staking... in "another life" I thought the earliest incarnations of
Steemitwith its 104 week unstaking was not a bad idea.=^..^=
I have the same experiences in project development when people seek funding at my job to address a regulatory concern. Attracting attention requires an elevator pitch whether your buying kitchenware or refueling a nuclear reactor. You brought up a good point I've ignored, unfortunately, regardless of a defensive reason.
So, then, I guess my 30-second (20-30 seconds) explanation would be this:
Start of pitch
Verify Your Brain (VYB) is a new tribe that allows for content creators, of any niche, to share their content and opinions with others. It proposes a moderation mechanism centered on justification, verification, and communication. It is also intent on allowing members the opportunity to expand this tribe following community review and approval.
End of pitch
My desire to support this tribe comes from a belief that a tribe owner is just that...an owner. For a community to be successful, it is their responsibility to drive it forward. That responsibility doesn't solely lay in the owner's hands.

I agree with the premise of "tribe ownership;" in a sense it's like someone who has a piece of land for a farmer's market. The premise is "this land is available," but it's not the person with the land's responsibility to create a successful farmer's market.
I really like the premise of VYB, and I think it could become a great example of "community driven governance" in a sense... as long as it remains patently clear to everyone involved that there is no "they" driving the development, onle a "we."

For understanding VYB, you just have to read the intro post, it explains it all simply. Not much study hours is required, one post and you good.
It was nice reading your thoughts on this all. From the tribe's plan I myself am happy to see the tokenomics and the attempt to regulate a platform without using downvotes.
I say that because the most recent adjustments to the PAL project (in early 2021) restructured the balance of payuts to where only a tiny fraction of the daily PAL tokens generated go to content creation/curation, with the vast majority going to reward miners and other projects. These days, even the highest rewarded PalNet posts earn maybe 1.5 PAL tokens (a few cents) with most earing less than 0.1 PAL tokens.
It will definitely be interesting to see how VYB unfolds, without downvotes.
