Managing your time is a form of self-discipline. Time management is an important discipline that determines the quality of one’s life.
Time management encompasses life management, personal management and it is more of managing oneself rather than time or oneself.
Time can disappear, it cannot be saved, replaceable or retrievable. Once it is gone to waste, you are never getting it back. Time is indispensable, all achievement, all successes requires time.
The fact that time cannot be save, it should be spent wisely and differently. Allocating time to high value activities is where the key to success lies and also the requirement for self-discipline.
You need this discipline to overcome procrastination and delay that hold most people back from achieving their dream and becoming successful. Procrastination has been said to be the thief of dreams.
The amount of value something has can be known by the amount of time you invest in it. You always spent more time and pay more attention to something of value, whether it is your family, your health, sport or social life or your money and career. It is only about how you spend your time that you know how important something is to you.
You cannot stay at home, play and watch tv and say your career success is important to you or stay out all day socializing and say your family is the most important to you. The way you spend your time truly show and help people know what you actually value.
Time management help you discipline yourself to set clear priority and stick to them. You must select the most valuable and important thing to do at a particular time and then work solely on it.
To carry out effective time management, I will be telling you 5 basic steps to help you in achieving this feat
- Make a decision today to become absolutely excellent at time management. Work at it until it becomes a habit.
- Make a list of everything you have to do that day before you begin your day.
- Organize your work list by priority.
You can do this by applying the ABCDE method to your list.
A = “Must do”—Serious consequences for noncompletio.
B = “Should do”—Mild consequences for doing or not doing.
C = “Nice to do”—No consequences whether you do it or not.
D = “Delegate”—Everything you possibly can to free up more time for those things that only you can do.
E = “Eliminate”—Discontinue all tasks and activities that are no longer essential to your work and to achieving your goals.
- Identify that one task that only you can do and that, if you do it well, can make a real difference.
- Every minute of everyday, ask yourself, “what is the most valuable use of my time, right now” and then discipline yourself to work on only that task until it is complete.
