Historically, dietary fats and oils have engendered considerable debate regarding type and optimal amounts used in the diet, their role in regulating body weight and their importance in the aetiology of chronic disease. Despite the contentious issues surrounding dietary fats, they are considered essential nutrients because they are required to perform critical functions in the body including serving as a carrier of preformed fat-soluble vitamins, enhancing the bioavailability of fat-soluble micronutrients and providing essential substrate for the synthesis of metabolically active compounds (such as the steroid hormones, testosterone, oestrogen and progesterone) among other useful functions. These benefits of fats notwithstanding, diets that are high in fat are strongly associated with an increased prevalence of obesity and an increased risk of developing coronary artery disease, high blood pressure, diabetes mellitus, and certain types of cancer.

Palm kernel oil is an important source of lauric oil which is in great demand for lauric acid with the expansion of oleochemical industry worldwide. The supply of lauric oil from coconut is dwindling, partly due to its low yield and declining cultivation and palm kernel oil is one way to increase supply.

Screening of germplasm has revealed a considerable level of variation for kernel to bunch which could be the basis for exploitation of elite materials with high kernel content. High-yielding elite dura palms with high kernel to bunch contents have been introgressed to produce new planting materials with high kernel to bunch (over 10%) as compared to the current commercial planting materials with 6% kernel to bunch. Planting materials with high kernel contents will soon be released for commercial planting.

Uses Of Palm Kernel Oil

Palm kernel oil can be used as cooking oil or edible fart, in making ice cream and mayonnaise, in the confectionery and trade, as a substitute for cocoa butter and also in the manufacturer of toilet soap, soap powders and detergents. In West Africa, which is used as hair oil and skin lotion and is often mixed with imported scent s.
Mixed with kerosene, it is used as a furniture polish, in sometime used as traditional medicine. In oleochemical industry, kernel oil now used for the manufacture of short-chain fatty acids, fatty alcohols, methyl esters, fatty amines e.t.c. for use of detergent, cosmetic and many other products.
Palm kernel oil, palm kernel olein, and palm kernel stearin find used in magazine, coffee whitener, and filled milk, biscuit, cream and coating fats.

Uses & Effectiveness
Possibly effective for...
Preventing a lack of vitamin A (vitamin A deficiency). There is some evidence that adding palm oil to the diet of pregnant women and children in developing countries might reduce the risk of developing vitamin A deficiency.
Possibly Ineffective for...
High cholesterol. Consuming palm oil as part of a specific diet plan does not seem to reduce cholesterol levels in people with high cholesterol. In fact, some research suggests that palm oil might actually increase cholesterol levels compared to other oils, such as soybean, canola, or sunflower oil.
Malaria. Some research suggests that dietary consumption of palm oil by children under 5 years of age in developing countries does not seem to decrease symptoms of malaria

Some special precautions and warning.

Pregnancy and breast-feeding: Palm oil is POSSIBLY SAFE when taken as a medicine during the last 3 months of pregnancy. There isn't enough reliable information to know if palm oil is safe to use as medicine when breast-feeding. Stay on the safe side and stick to food amounts.
Children: Palm oil is POSSIBLY SAFE when taken by mouth as a medicine. Palm oil has been used for up to 6 months in children under 5 years of age and for up to 12 months in children 5 years of age and older.

High cholesterol: Palm oil contains a type of fat that can increase cholesterol levels. Regularly eating meals containing palm oil can increase levels of "bad" low-density lipoprotein cholesterol. This might be a problem for people who already have high cholesterol
