The Joy's of Change

A very short few weeks ago, we received the news that our landlord was moving a loved partner into the house we rented and so we needed to find a new place.

What ensued was a frantic search for a rental, to discover to our horror that the world is alot more anti gay than what I had realised.

Coming out later in life, and never being confronted with any homophobic behaviour, to running into blatant comments against gay marriage, owners wanting "traditional" family structures. To say that I was shocked, dismayed and honestly straight up (see what I did there) hurt by the responses.

I mean honestly, we live in 2022, in a country that embraces a multitude of races, traditions, languages and religions. To find out that we, as a lesbian married couple, was essentially not welcome in 99% of rentals, was crushing.

I love my wife, and honestly have found that one person that honestly completes my life in a way that I had only imagined in fairy tales and dreams. To find such a large anti gay movement really just opened my eyes to a world that I had imagined being so different.

Forward on 2 weeks, and we have found a lovely place, and here is where the irony comes in fast and hard. It is in Robertson, small town, farming community, Robertson.

The fact that a small town is more welcoming open and friendly towards our sexuality is mind blowing, so the gay capital of South Africa, gets overshadowed by a teeny farm village.

The shock, the horror and the feeling of not belonging is still firmly lingering.

I am trying hard to be excited, it's a beautiful property, has a community garden for vegetables located close, a beautiful home with exposed beams and a pool.

But shaking the feeling of being not wanted in a city that I have called my home for shy on 20 years, simply for loving a woman, is hard.

Cape Town I love you, and I am going to miss your soft waves, your hippy vibe and amazing sights, but I cannot stay, until I feel welcome to be who I am, love who I love without fear and judgement.

Inclusion and acceptance matters!

I'm so sorry to hear of your troubles with people who can't move on with the times.

The world will catch on.. Eventually

I hope so stay strong😎👍

Thank you again :)

That's a shame that you were not accepted by so many rentals. I hope you have a good start in your current place.

Thank you, here's hoping to a bight future!!

Wow. That really sucks. I am actually shocked at the behaviour. On what grounds do they want to prohibit you? Or is it some sort of traditionalist mafia? lol

They are looking for traditional families.. Rolls eyes

Gosh it's shocking that on 2022 we are still faced with such bigotry. Much love to you and your wife. May you find peace and happiness and a beautiful home together. ❤️ I'm shocked that Cape Town, the pride capital of South Africa, is a place where you don't feel welcomed. Really. You deserve all the warmth and acceptance in the world. 😔💙❤️💜

Thank you, it was a massive emotional hit.
Speaking to other lesbians, we are not alone in our struggles and that's the shocking part. They have struggled too

💞 So not right. I'm so sorry. Love should be celebrated. Full stop. 💞💞💞people are asshats 😒. Not everyone, but far more than we require.

Well amen to that.. Lol.. More asshats than we need

🤣🙄💞🤗

Absolutely shocking, I’m so sad and frustrated to read what you are sharing.
I’ve often also found myself in situations where I took for granted things like acceptance towards different races, or sexual orientation, etc, things that I find absolutely normal. And I’ve been shocked realising that there are still people that are having mentalities that I can’t even understand they can exist. Nowadays (neither before, but let’s leave it here).
I’m sorry and at the same time happy to read that you found a beautiful place, this might be the direction where life wanna take you 💜🙏🏽
But still, I hope there’s integration in Cape Town as well.

Yikeees, it is sad to hear that this kind of thing is still happening in Cape Town of all places. I am glad you found a place at least. Here is to happy new vibes!

Thank you, here's to a happy outcome despite it all
