All way too many times I have been asked this very question. " What are you going to do with all of your time now that you're retired."
My first response is usually a puzzled look, followed by an awkward period of silence, as I contemplate my answer.
I feel bad for the people asking this question, knowing that their life has been totally consumed by that four-letter word, WORK.
Without getting too excited by the pure joy retirement has brought my way so far, I let them know about some of my hobbies.
Therein lies the key to a HAPPY retirement, having things to do that bring you enjoyment.
There is something about hobbies that I find unique.
Hobbies tend to be carried over from earlier good times.
They need time to develop, and as we become more proficient at them, our interest peaks.
I'm not saying that one can't pick up something brand new in their GOLDEN YEARS, HahA, and run with the ball.
But, if that were par for the course, then why are so many people wondering what are they are going to do when they finally have TIME!
A hobby of mine, nurtured by my Dad, is woodworking.
These are some pieces of wood I milled.
I will be making some signs for a Woodworker's Fair that is held in Norwich NY. The fair takes place the last weekend in August, by then I hope things can return somewhat back to normal.
If it is canceled, the great thing about wood is that it will not spoil, and I will just keep them in storage!
I'll be making the signs using three different species of wood, Red Cedar, Spalted Maple, and White Pine.
After lettering the signs we use a plunge router to cut out the letters.
A plunge router will let you route out the letters freehand. Using this tool requires some practice, but it can be mastered over time.
Different plunge router bits can be used, and in this case, the router bit will be cutting a V groove into the wood.
The bit will not make contact with the surface of the wood until the handles on the router are pulled down.
Transcribing the letters onto the wood takes longer than cutting them out with the router.
With the routing complete it is time to paint the letters.
The paint I use is a Milk Paint which works great for this job, but a little difficult to find.
Painting complete, the next step is to do the final sanding, this time with a 180 grit paper.
As you can see from this closeup, the paint will absorb into the grain of the wood.
That is what I like about the Milk Paint, a little fine sanding and the letters will have a perfect outline.
With the first coat of polyurethane on this sign, the colors in the Red Cedar become richer.
After about 13 hours of hobbitizing the signs are complete, along with the picture wire installed, and ready to be hung.
Like most everything we do, there is some cost.
The mill in this picture was purchased several years ago and is used for business, and in my case now, is used strictly for pleasure.
Here are just a few of the projects that retirement has offered me the time to do.
Some of the pieces are sold, and others furnish our home.
A Book Matched, Black Cherry coffee table, with a magazine rack below.
A Black Walnut slab,
supplied some beautiful material for a coffee table and a couple of end tables.
A variety of cutting boards being fabricated for market, as well as gifts.
Cherry crouch wood base, with a 3" Red Oak top, coffee table.
Along the journey to being retired, I have been fortunate enough to have found things I'm passionate about.
Having these passions, coupled with TIME, has not left me wondering what I'm going to do in retirement.
We can only work for so long, the question is, will you be one of those people with that query?
Hope you enjoyed. thebigsweed
You ever make any guitars? Looks like you have all the right tools to make a solid body bookmatched guitar body.
No, I have never made a guitar, but I would love to give it a try. I have made some really neat stuff though including this
The entire car was made from wood including the fenders. I made it with one of my sons, for a customer who was having a big event with the theme being the Roaring Twenties. Guests at the party could enter the car from the opposite side you see here and get their picture taken.
Wow that is a big project, just need to put some old school grain mill type gears in there to pedal it :-). If you ever find any flamed maple logs those would work perfect for a guitar body.
Interesting, Flamed Maple, I've never heard that name before, with a quick search I realized that flamed maple is another name for Curly maple, tiger maple, and Fiddleback maple, all names I'm familiar with. Some interesting names for maple that is highly figured. Some other very cool looking maple is wormy maple which also goes by the name Ambrosia. Spalted maple or Blackline maple is a tree that has succumb to a fungus. The coloring is just beautiful if the wood can be salvaged while it is still sound. Having a sawmill, whenever we ran into any type of figured wood we would always set it aside. When building our kitchen cabinets, I used both spalted and wormy maple throughout the kitchen. In this picture, you can see both.
Here is a beautiful log that we milled. We were able to get 30 slabs, with live edge on both sides.
Well, you ran into the right guy if you love wood.
Stay safe, and thanks for showing so much interest @sketch.and.jam its been a pleasure meeting you!
I think we have similar attitudes towards life. I’ve always worked to live not the other way around. I love wood working and I’m looking to get into it more. I’ve made a bunch of live edge shelves for our house and some black walnut thresholds. We have a live edge black walnut table that I love too. I’m looking to find a wood supplier as I’d like to start making tables to sell.
I here you when it comes to the love for working with wood and creating something beautiful. Being fortunate enough to have our own mill allows me to cut some gorgeous lumber. I have a nice stockpile of air-dried 2 inches to 4 inches in slabs, all different species of wood.
If you can find the right outfit to supply you with slabs, there is a lot of money to be made making all types of furniture, both live edge and square stock slabs.
It's fun finding another dude in love with wood and with a similar stance about how to live.
Stay safe @cryptictruth and good luck with any and all wood endeavors.
I don’t have a mill, but I’ve used my chainsaw to cut some slabs, but that limited to the blade width which is 18’’. I would also like to get a wood planer because using a belt sander is just not the same.
Damn! That wood work is incredible. I'm jealous of not having the space or equipment to do that type of stuff! That seems like it would be badass! Hoping someday to have a piece of land big enough to have a mill and make awesome projects like this. My best project has been a night stand with red oak. That was when I lived at my parents house though and had all my dads tools like a table saw and saw horses. Really made it easier! Living in a condo, I couldn't hope to do something like that here lol
I shared this in the OCD community. I wouldn't bother posting stuff like this in GEMS. It seems that in GEMS, there's only a circle of people who get support, if you're not in that circle you're out of luck. OCD is a much better and appreciative community of this type of post and work.
Definitely not the setting to be doing woodwork, condo, and all. Using one's own hands to construct something is always so fulfilling. Working with wood, and really taking in all of the beauty it has to offer becomes a passion.
It is really neat to take a tree in the forest, cut it down, mill it, let it air dry for a year or two, and then turn it into something extra special. You're right, that is badass @cmplxty.
Gathering all of the tools and learning the fine art of woodworking takes some time and a little money, but it is a hobby you can take to your grave.
The grain of the different woods is just stunning! Lovely work!
Thanks @goldenoakfarm!
