Intro

In this article I present a clay object that I made myself (9.80 inches high). The bottle with a cap in the shape of a bear has a slanted neck to make pouring out the contents easier. It can be used for liquid and loose food. Due to the polished surface and the special firebrand, the vessel has very special properties.

In diesem Artikel stelle ich ein Objekt aus Ton vor, das ich selbst hergestellt habe (25 cm hoch). Die Flasche mit Verschluß in Form eines Bären hat einen schräg aufgesetzten Hals um das Ausschütten des Inhaltes zu erleichtern. Es kann für flüssige und lose Lebensmittel genutzt werden. Durch die polierte Oberfläche und den speziellen Brand hat das Gefäß ganz besondere Eigenschaften.

This so-called smoke-fired ceramic has no glaze, the reflective surface is created by polishing the unfired clay with stones. The firing in the earth oven lasts about a week and we try to let as little air as possible get into the oven. Oxidation with oxygen turns the clay red, reduction without air turns the clay black. This is achieved by sprinkling damp sawdust on the objects every few hours. An exciting process that always leads to new results.

Diese sogenannte Rauchbrandkeramik hat keine Glasur, die spielgelnde Oberfläche entsteht durch polieren des noch ungebrannten Tons mittels Steinen. Der Brand im Erdofen dauert etwa eine Woche und es wird versucht so wenig Luft wie möglich in den Ofen gelangen zu lassen. Durch Oxidation mit Sauerstoff wird der Ton rot, bei Reduktion ohne Luft wird der Ton schwarz. Das wird erreicht indem alle paar Stunden feuchtes Sägemehl auf die Objekte gestreut wird. Ein spannender Prozess, der immer wieder zu neuen Ergebnissen führt.

In addition to artistic work, this technique is currently only found in a few cultures in the world. Particularly noteworthy are the Pueblo cultures and the old craftsmen in Hungary and Portugal.

Neben der künstlerischen Arbeit gibt es diese Technik zur Zeit nur noch in wenigen Kulturen dieser Welt. Besonders hervorzuheben sind die Pueblo Kulturen sowie die alten Handwerker in Ungarn und Portugal.
