Well it's another year in the bag. As one is wont to do, I spent some time reflecting on the year past and formulated the question of what was the biggest surprise of the year to me? Was it the two failed assassination attempts on Donald Trump? Could it be the massive drone sightings first seen in New Jersey and now throughout the country? Well both are strong contenders, yet I still think for me the rise of AI has been the most surprising trend of 2024.
Oh everyone is talking about it! AI seems to be the hot topic of so many conversations whether it is on social media or on the mainstream media, people just can't seem to get enough of AI. I have to be honest and admit that I find the topic of AI and our future is very compelling. AI purports to change the very essence of our lives and especially the way we earn our livelihoods. While all the hype sounds great, I still consider myself a skeptic.
Yet the truly staggering thing about artificial intelligence is the vast oceans of money that the corporate world has thrown at generative AI. I suppose from the perspective of the giant tech stocks and also among even the smaller players, the rush to AI feels like the quest for the atomic bomb where any amount of money was justified in hopes of not allowing the others to get control of the technology first.

As an aside I'm not sure how good some AI is, but I wish Google would employ it more in their doc app where it translates voice to text. Honestly I spend more time correcting the goofy mistakes then I would have spent typing it out, and believe me I am a super slow typer. Crazy mistakes like capitalizing Donald but not capitalizing Trump. I mean how can it not know those two go together and should both be capitalized. Another example is where it typed the word “scene” when clearly from the use in the sentence it should have been “seen”. Funny thing is after it typed in “scene” it flagged it as fishy and suggested a correction to “seen” LOL. Honestly you can't make these things up!

I am leary about AI, but there have been hints of it along the way, so I guess I didn't consider it a surprise. I waffle on how I feel about it. Surely there are areas or categories of things that it will truly help, but then there are a lot more things where it can be used so deceptively, that I'm concerned it will only muddy the truth causing more fake news (& etc) that can be made to appear more realistic.
The attempts on Trumps life didn't surprise me either. Of course I could not have predicted when or where, I was concerned it would happen before the elections and even now, before the 20th and if not.....the possibilities could be there through his whole term, so I was ever so glad they were not successful, I'm not confident that is the end of it though.
The drone stuff maybe surprised me more, but true to form, our treasonous leaders have not come clean about it, even when the people begged and demanded for them too. That part of it is not surprising though as there are many things they have done right in the people's faces that have been bad and wrong and they didn't care a bit! Just kept on doing it and .... that is the same about the drones. They are working for themselves and not our people or what is the best for our country.
Yes the waters will be muddied by deep fake videos as the technology gets better in the future. I have heard that future videos from celebrities or news outlets will be cryptographically signed to validate authenticity muck like the kings wax seal would.
I figured someone will be accused of something they didn't do, but what ?? ... now there is an AI video of them doing it, not real, but there it is. Created evidence.
OH ! ...and I love the top photo where the faded/fogged sun is a clock face.
Yes, I hope to see more improvement in the speech transcribing too.
