Cuando hablamos de bebidas estimulantes el café pasa a adueñarse de la escena cultural para así convertirse en uno de los mayores referentes con relación al tema, pues éste juega un rol esencial dentro de nuestra cotidianidad debido al carácter universal que reposa sobre su propia esencia y el valor simbólico que incluso nosotros mismos podemos concederle gracias al impacto social y el efecto económico que ejerce sobre nuestro día a día de forma permanente. A continuación me place compartir con ustedes, como buen amante del café que soy, ciertas curiosidades generales y personales en alusión a dicha bebida como catalizador sociocultural de los mecanismos y procesos convencionales que marcan nuestra cotidianidad.
When we talk about stimulating drinks, coffee takes over the cultural scene and thus becomes one of the greatest references in relation to the topic, since it plays an essential role in our daily lives due to the universal character that rests on its own essence and the symbolic value that even we can grant it thanks to the social impact and the economic effect it has on our daily life in a permanent way. Next, I am pleased to share with you, as a good coffee lover, some general and personal curiosities in reference to this beverage as a socio-cultural catalyst of the conventional mechanisms and processes that mark our daily life.
Soy participe de la idea que estipula que para entender el impacto que algo ejerce sobre nuestras vidas primero es necesario comprender de qué trata ese algo y el origen al cual se encuentra sujeto, ¿no creen? Pues al hablar de café, consiste en ser una de las bebidas más consumidas a nivel global, junto con el té y la mismísima agua, obtenida a partir del tostado y la moledura de los granos encontrados en los frutos de la planta Coffea, conocida popularmente como cafeto, para luego ser preparados mediante el proceso de infusión, aunque es pertinente mencionar que dicha bebida es conocida por su potencial estimulante gracias a su contenido de cafeína; una sustancia psicoactiva incitante del sistema nervioso central. El café también es conocido por ser uno de los productos más comercializados del planeta y éste tiende a consumirse después de las comidas, como única comida o inclusive al momento de entablar conversaciones, pues a raíz de ello se considera que es una de las bebidas no alcohólicas más socializadoras en muchos países, aunque en mi caso particular tiendo a beberlo al inicio de mis días por mera costumbre debido a que su gusto, por ser amargo y fuerte, lo encuentro como un disfrute cultivado, más no de carácter espontaneo.
I am a participant in the idea that in order to understand the impact that something has on our lives, it is first necessary to understand what that something is about and the origin to which it is subject, don't you think? Well, when we talk about coffee, it is one of the most consumed beverages worldwide, along with tea and water, obtained from roasting and grinding the beans found in the fruits of the Coffea plant, popularly known as coffee tree, and then prepared through the process of infusion, although it is appropriate to mention that this drink is known for its potential stimulant thanks to its caffeine content, a psychoactive substance inciting the central nervous system. Coffee is also known for being one of the most commercialized products on the planet and it tends to be consumed after meals, as the only meal or even at the time of engaging in conversation, since as a result it is considered to be one of the most socializing non-alcoholic beverages in many countries, although in my particular case I tend to drink it at the beginning of my days out of mere habit because its taste, being bitter and strong, I find it to be a cultivated enjoyment, but not of a spontaneous nature.
Ahora, una adecuada reseña histórica puede remontarse en el siglo XI al extremo oriental de África, más específicamente en el reino de Abisinia, lo que hoy conocemos como Etiopía, debido a que el cafeto era originario de tal región y tendía a crecer de manera silvestre, esto permitió que las tribus autóctonas que hacían vida en la zona conocieran las propiedades y cualidades energéticas que poseían los granos de sus frutos, luego el café pasaría a ser introducido en Arabia de donde se expandiría posteriormente al resto del mundo gracias al dominio turco sobre la península de Anatolia.
Now, a proper historical review can be traced back to the 11th century in the far east of Africa, more specifically in the kingdom of Abyssinia, what we know today as Ethiopia, due to the fact that the coffee plant originated in that region and tended to grow wild. Con relación a Venezuela, el café comenzaría a adquirir relevancia a mediados del siglo XVIII gracias a los misioneros españoles que optaron en realizar la primera siembra de cafetos a expensas del rio Caroní con semillas originarias de Surinam para así aprovechar el potencial tropical del sureño Estado Bolívar. Luego, a medida que fue transcurriendo el tiempo, la siembra de cafetos comenzó a extenderse a lo largo y ancho del territorio venezolano hasta lograr cubrir las zonas andinas, zulianas y demás parajes, dicha expansión terminó generando profundos y cruciales cambios con respecto a la cultura productiva nacional de la época debido a que el cacao venezolano, considerado actualmente uno de los mejores del mundo, dejó de ser el único y principal rubro de exportación de la economía venezolana, trayendo esto como resultado la reactivación de los sistemas agrícolas que se encontraban detenidos por falta de sustancialidad y la diversificación financiera con la integración de un nuevo elemento sujeto a la demanda y consumo internacional: el café venezolano de alta calidad.

Un dato curioso radica en que antes del auge petrolero que caracteriza en la actualidad a Venezuela, tal país llegó a formar parte del distinguido grupo de las cinco principales naciones productoras y exportadoras de café, pues es oportuno destacar que el cultivo del café se encuentra estrecha y culturalmente ligado a la historia, a la sociedad y al propio progreso, a pesar de las adversidades acaecidas por malas gestiones políticas, de muchos paises que se han atribuido la labor de producir ésta bebida de inmenso valor e influencia universal durante generaciones enteras.
A curious fact is that before the oil boom that characterizes Venezuela today, this country became part of the distinguished group of the five major producing and exporting nations of coffee, because it is appropriate to emphasize that the cultivation of coffee is closely and culturally linked to history, society and progress itself, despite the adversities caused by poor political management of many countries that have been attributed the task of producing this drink of immense value and universal influence for generations.
Desde un punto de vista más personal y orgánico, pienso que, así como el vino posee un aroma característico que le añade cierto nivel de apreciación para luego inducirnos a disfrutar de una copa de él, lo mismo sucede con el café y las propiedades gustativas que giran a su alrededor, pues su fragancia desempeña un papel fundamental en función al placer que se adquiere al beber una taza. Se puede decir que el café posee alrededor de 800 compuestos químicos, pues la naturaleza de su proporción determina la esencia que recae sobre la especificidad de su calidad; desde la vainillina hasta el buqué a mantequilla, son diversos los elementos que atañan la excelencia aromática y propiamente gustativa de tal bebida para su completo disfrute, aunque desafortunadamente la mayoría de estos compuestos tienden a deteriorarse en presencia del aire o de la luz, por tal razón recomiendo mantener el café en granos y molerlos en el último momento para así minimizar la superficie de contacto con los elementos que puedan descomponer los aromas y sabores, esto con el fin de hacer la experiencia una cuestión mucho más exquisita y sencillamente sublime.
From a more personal and organic point of view, I think that, just as wine has a characteristic aroma that adds a certain level of appreciation to it and then induces us to enjoy a glass of it, the same happens with coffee and the taste properties that revolve around it, since its fragrance plays a fundamental role in terms of the pleasure acquired when drinking a cup. It can be said that coffee has around 800 chemical compounds, as the nature of their proportion determines the essence that falls on the specificity of its quality; From vanillin to butter bouquet, there are diverse elements that concern the aromatic and taste excellence of such beverage for its complete enjoyment, although unfortunately most of these compounds tend to deteriorate in the presence of air or light, for this reason I recommend to keep the coffee beans and grind them at the last moment to minimize the surface of contact with elements that can decompose the aromas and flavors, this in order to make the experience a much more exquisite and simply sublime.
A pesar de que el consumo de café se encuentra dentro de los estándares generalmente seguros con un mínimo de incidencias negativas para la salud, también aconsejo la moderación al momento de disfrutar de él, pues más allá de la evidencia científica que podemos encontrar capaz de acreditar o desacreditar su consumo, no dejamos de hablar de una sustancia psicoactiva que puede alterar nuestras capacidades mentales si solemos abusar de ella, por lo tanto, insisto, mucha precaución, amigos.
