[ENG - ESP ] Mamá, la primera palabra para entender el amor - Mama, the first word to learn about love

¿Alguna vez han pensado por qué todos los bebés dicen la palabra mamá? A propósito del día de las madres, nos llamó la atención lo curioso de esa palabra y cómo se encuentra presente en muchos idiomas del mundo. Al principio pensábamos que podría tratarse del pasado en común que comparten varios idiomas actuales, como es el caso de las lenguas que proceden del latín, pero vimos que es mucho más grande que eso.

Estuvimos investigando y encontramos que la palabra mamá está entre las primeras cosas que puede decir un bebé (en cualquier parte del mundo), por ser el sonido de la letra M -junto a la P y la B- el más fácil de pronunciar para ellos. Además, ese sonido se genera de manera natural cuando el infante se está alimentando del pecho de su madre (porque pronunciar la M consiste básicamente en abrir y cerrar la boca). Entonces, por decirlo de alguna manera, lo va practicando de forma inconsciente. Así, cuando luego tiene hambre, sólo repite ese gesto para indicar su necesidad. Y como es la mujer quien lleva la responsabilidad de amamantarlo, se ha asumido que el sonido va dirigido a ella.

Es día de las madres en varios países y nos pareció hermoso descubrir esto. Nos recuerda que la maternidad es un milagro en el cual se manifiesta la vida y la naturaleza se muestra en su esplendor. Mamá es sinónimo de protección, cuidado y alimento. También es bueno pensar que mamá es seguridad cuando estamos más vulnerables, como un bebé depende de ella para sobrevivir y crecer sano y salvo.

Hoy queremos honrar y felicitar a todas esas madres que, por naturaleza o por decisión, han llevado la noble y ardua tarea de proteger la vida. Las madres son el sostén de la sociedad, al ser las garantes del crecimiento seguro de sus hijos e hijas.

Mama, the first word to learn about love

Have you ever thought why all babies say the word mama? On Mother's Day, we were caught by the curiosity of this word and how it is present in many languages around the world. At first we thought that it could be the common past shared by several current languages, as is the case of languages that come from Latin, but we saw that it is much bigger than that.

We did some research and found that the word mama is among the first things a baby can say (anywhere in the world), as the sound of the letter M -along with P and B- is the easiest for them to pronounce. Besides, that sound is generated naturally when the infant is feeding from the mother's breast (because pronouncing the M basically consists of opening and closing the mouth). So, in a manner of speaking, it is practiced unconsciously. Thus, when the baby is hungry, he only repeats this gesture to indicate his need. And since it is the woman who is responsible for breastfeeding, it has been assumed that the sound is addressed to her.

It is Mother's Day in several countries and we found this to be a beautiful realisation. It reminds us that motherhood is a miracle in which life is manifested and nature is shown in its splendor. Mama is synonymous with protection, care and nourishment. It is also good to think that mom is security when we are most vulnerable, as a baby depends on her to survive and grow up safe and sound.
