Market Friday: visiting a plant nursery, ไปซื้อต้นไม้

The train arrived quite early at my destination but the morning sunshine was unusually strong for rainy season. The weather has been in extreme mode this year; drought in summer months, heavy rain for several days alternating with very hot sunny days. I was wondering what kind of weather we would have for winter months later this year. Because of the drought and extreme heat, a few saplings did not survive the extreme heat. So, I dropped by a plant nursery tucked away in side streets outside town center.

I found out that my old’s friends plant nursery had disappeared from the old plot of land. So we went to another nearby plant nursery as the owner is a cousin of my old friends. He told me that my friend and her family had moved to the north side on their own land to build a house. But my friend just rented a small plot of land to sell small pot plants. This plot of land is located across the road so I could take a photo of the new contact number.

This plant nursery seems to be doing a roaring business as the owner is in the middle of some major construction. I was quite impressed by the skill of the driver of a cement truck. He could back his truck in through a very narrow gate and up under the hanging branches of the big tree. The owner of the nursery seems to be building a new cement driveway towards his house.

This was the first time I saw an ordinary family of villagers whose wealth has made him bought all the best gadgets and expensive pedigree English dogs! They also have my ideal imported mountain bike! Yet, these people are still so down to earth and don’t care much about luxurious brand name accessories. Everything bought for making the business grow bigger. They are certainly making a lot on money selling plants and saplings. I gathered that the ability to exports several truck loads of plants to customers in Laos made all the difference to their income.

There are mostly fruit trees and thousands of saplings in this plant nursery. Very few flowering plants could be found around the place. So I took some photos of small pot plants on the opposite side of the road. The sun was beating on my back, I hope the heat would sterilise my cloth from unwelcome germs. The light clean air of the countryside made my spirit feeling much more invigorating even though I didn’t sleep too well on the train.

The slow economic situation means that all decorating pot plants would not do too well as most hotels and resorts had to cut all their expenses and all work on garden landscaping had to be cancelled. This has been a very tough time for small and medium size businesses in this small town where several hotels are for sale. I think I would have to learn to keep a plant nursery for survival one day!

ตอนนี้อากาศเปลี่ยนแปลงแบบสุดขั้ว สัปดาห์ก่อนมีฝนตกทุกวัน สัปดาห์ต่อมาแดดออกเปรี้ยง บรรยากาศร้อนอบอ้าวเหมือนหน้าร้อน เราแปลกใจมากที่แดดตอนเช้าแรงเหมือนตอนเที่ยงวัน เราตัดสินใจไปเยี่ยมร้านขายต้นไม้ที่เราเคยรู้จักมานานมาก ระยะหลังเราไม่มีเวลาไปเยี่ยมที่ร้านเลย เราหาร้านของเพื่อนเก่าไม่เจอ จึงไปที่ร้านใกล้ๆเพราะเขาเป็นพี่น้องกัน เขาก็บอกว่าเพื่อนเราย้ายร้านไปอยู่ใกล้ที่ใหม่ ที่กำลังสร้างบ้านใหม่ แต่เขาเช่าที่แปลวเล็กแปลงหนึ่งใกล้ๆที่นี่ เพื่อขายไม้ประดับที่เหลืออยู่ เราก็เดินไปดูที่แปลงนั้นและถ่ายรูปไว้

ที่ร้านนี้ขายต้นไม้จนรวย ในที่มีแต่ต้นไม้ตอนและทาบกิ่ง เกือบทุกชนิด มีเป็นหลายพันต้น เพราะเขาขายส่งไปหลายแห่งมาก รวมทั้งที่ลาวด้วย เขาทำเงินได้ดีมาก จนเริ่มมีการก่อสร้างเทปูนถนนในบริเวณบ้าน และขยายที่อยู่อาศัยด้วย ในร้านนี้มีจักรยานเสือภูเขาอย่างดีที่เราอยากได้ และมีรถเอวีไว้ขับเล่นในสวนด้วย แถมยังมีสุนัขพันธุ์อังกฤษที่มีราคาแพงสองตัวด้วย ชาวบ้านธรรมดานี่เขาใช้ชีวิตติดดินดี เราไม่ใช้ของแบรนด์เนมแพงๆ แต่เขารู้จักใช้เครื่องมือที่ดีมากในการใช้ชีวิต และทำธุรกิจ

ในร้านแทบไม่มีไม้ดอกหรือไม้ประดับเลย เพราะเศรษฐกิจแย่มาก โรงแรมและรีสอร์ตปิดกันช่วงที่ผ่านมา คนไม่ท่องเที่ยวเหมือนแต่ก่อน ทำให้ต้องตัดรายจ่ายกันมาก ไม่มีการตกแต่งสวนให้สวยงาม หลายแห่งต้องเลิกกิจการ ปล่อยให้สวนมีหญ้าขึ้นรก ตอนนี้มีคนต้องการขายกิจการโรงแรมหลายแห่งในเมืองนี้ แต่ร้านขายต้นไม้นี้สามารถสั่งรถปูนมาเทปูนทำถนน คนขับรถก็เก่งมาก เขาสามารถขับผ่านประตูทางเข้าแคบๆเข้ามาได้ แถมยังต้องลอดสายไฟและกิ่งไม้ด้วย เราเฝ้าดูและเอาใจช่วยคนขับรถมาก เจ้าของร้านบอกว่าคนขับมาบ่อยจนชินทางแล้ว. เราซื้อต้นไม้เล็กๆสองต้น ราคาต้นไม้ขึ้นสองเท่าแล้ว และต้นไม้ขนาดเล็กมาก ของทุกอย่างกำลังจะขึ้นราคา เราคิดว่าต่อไปเราอาจจะต้องมาเปิดร้านขายต้นไม้เพื่อหาเลี้ยงชีพในอนาคต
