Los enanos estaban escondidos un poco alejados del hogar de Bilbo, y Gandalf les señala la ubicación del hogar ya que ellos tenían un plan para convencerlo de ir con ellos.

Thror al envejecer le pasa el mapa a Thráin y este lo entrega a Gandalf antes de morir siendo prisionero de Dol Guldur. Es una reliquia que muestra la Montaña Solitaria, el río que fluía, las tierras que le rodean, y la entrada secreta al lado Occidental de la montaña... El escritor Tolkien al momento de crear el libro, se encargó meticulosamente de estar pendiente en la ilustración de las runas que podemos observar en el libro, son las runas de la luna y son las que permiten que se abra la puerta hacia la montaña, cuando es luna llena.
