Like A Glove

Today was the first day for a new employee wo was given the job mainly on the grounds as I felt sorry for him and he needs a break in life. My family was skeptical as they do not know him from a bar of soap and it was kind of thrown on them by myself.

I know him from previous dealings with my handy man as this person is his cousin and he came across as a decent well mannered person. He is in is 40's so not exactly what most companies would be looking for, but I felt that he could be an unpolished diamond and needed a chance at least. Being a small family run business we cannot carry dead weight and the hope is e would prove his value if there was any and this I had no idea. I was paying his salary directly so it was my gamble and thought it was worth a shot at least. If it did not work out then there was nothing ventured nothing gained and I would be out of pocket for a month or two.

I never interfered today and I never ventured into the office as this they need to sort on their own and he needs to find his feet. I received a phone call late tis afternoon from my daughter thanking me for hiring this guy as she thinks he is marvelous.

The business putting it bluntly is lacking brains on the floor and with not disrespecting our current staff this guy will definitely add some more. It is amazing what someone is capable of once you start chatting to them and this guy is an allrounder who has loads to offer.

Firstly he is a mechanic so a big tick as he can help keep our vehicles on the road which is something that I never knew and is a big plus. Secondly he has previous courier and warehouse experience which is another major plus and thirdly he is an ex boxer and is excited about working with our products as he knows them already.

On his first day he found a few mistakes that had happened and rectified them which was why I wanted him on the floor. Having an extra set of eyes and ears double checking the work being done is crucial in this line of work as mistakes cost money. No one expected him to be so helpful on his first day and with him being so humble and grateful for having a job everybody loves having him around.

Attitude as we know can rub people up the wrong way and it is refreshing to find someone that just gets on with others around him. Having a small team of staff in a family run business you have to be careful who you add to the mix and anyone coming in needs to add to what you already have in place. It looks like the fit could not have been any better as firstly he knows the products that we are selling and knows the brand very well. This was very unexpected and came out of the blue as he has more product knowledge than any of us combined. He knows all the boxing products and the differences between all the various gloves and unless you have used them you would not necessarily know this information.

This evening I feel far more relaxed that things went so well and he compliments the staff we already have and do think he will be the last one we require. We will need some seamstresses after Easter for the other side of the business, but for the warehouse we are finally sorted.

It sure is nice when a gamble on someone else pays off. Too many times it goes the wrong way. Hope he continues to be an asset.

I really hope so as well, but he is already proving his worth.
