Over the last few weeks I have read more and more on here about free speech and censorship. This comes as places such as YouTube, Facebook and more recently Twitter have blocked or censored content which they deem to be harmful.
The first (and often only) thought people have is "they are censoring me - I should be able to share my own opinion". While I agree in free speech; the advent of the internet means it has become much easier to spread false information to a wide audience very quickly.
Information that is blatantly false and could harm others (or make them act out) should be censored in my mind. The classic example of this is those sharing that 5g towers are the cause of coronavirus. These claims come with no solid evidence other than that 5g came out when people started dying from the virus and thus it must be the cause. This has led to people lighting cell towers on fire! Good job when we have been locked up and many require this to work from home. There are many more examples of harmful 'propaganda' being shared and then censored - and people arent happy.
This is not about centralised social media having a certain political agenda, its about keeping the internet a place wjere people can find accurate information rather than harmful information. If people disagree with things then I am all for peaceful protests - I just dont think the internet is the best place for this. It is to easy for information to be widely spread and misinterpreted.
Just a rant as I am seeing more and more people here posting about censorship
