El esófago es un órgano tubular que forma parte del sistema digestivo alto, se caracteriza por ser un tubo formado por músculos, se encarga de comunicar en su parte superior con la faringe y en su parte inferior con el estómago.
La palabra esófago proviene del idioma griego y a través de los años se ha descrito como "la entrada de los alimentos", y esto se debe a que gracias a él puede pasar el bolo alimenticio, siendo así transportado desde la boca hasta nuestro estómago.
Anatómicamente lo podemos encontrar ubicado en la parte posterior del mediastino, atraviesa el abdomen pasando así por el diafragma, en su parte superior lo encontramos en la parte posterior del tórax.
Se encuentra conformado por una capa de mucosa, una capa de submucosa, una capa serosa y una capa muscular.
El esófago cuenta con dos esfínter, uno en cada parte, es decir, uno superior y uno inferior.
En un adulto promedio, sano, el esófago mide aproximadamente de 25 a 35 cm, con 1.5 a 2 cm de ancho.
El esfínter esofágico superior se encarga de dividir a la faringe del esófago, y es quien permite que podamos realizar el movimiento de "tragar", es acá donde comienza el proceso de la deglución.
El esfínter esofágico inferior está constituido por músculo liso, y es el encargo de prevenir o evitar que se regrese el contenido gástrico hacia el esófago y posteriormente hacia la boca. Esto se ve reflejado también con el ácido gástrico.
