Hortensia (Hydrangea) is the name of a genus of 70-75 species of flowering plants originating from East and South Asia (Japan, China, Himalayas, Indonesia), North America and South America. Most species come from Japan and China. Shrubs with a height of 1 to 3 meters, but there are also those that spread in other plants to reach a height of 30 meters. Ovoid-shaped leaves, edged edges, sparkling light green color. Apart from species that grow in cool climates that have the property of shedding leaves (decay plants), most species are evergreen plants.
In this plant what looks like a petal is actually a petal leaf.
Flowers are white in most species, but some species, especially H. macrophylla, have flowers that can be blue, red, pink, or purple depending on the soil's pH level. While the buds are still green, the flowers turn green, when they bloom light blue or pink which gradually changes to the older dark colors (dark blue or red) before the flowers fall out. Acidic soils produce blue flowers, soils with normal pH produce creamy white flowers
In some species, starting to consist of 2 types of flowers, groups of flowers that are fertile in the middle of panicles and sterile flowers that are larger are arranged in a circle. There are also species that have flowers that are all fertile and have the same shape. and alkaline soil produces pink or purple flowers. Hortensia is one of the plants that in the leaves of flowers collects the element of aluminum which is released by acidic soil so that the flower turns blue.
