Tabarca Island - where history & nature meet 🌊
🏝️ T A B A R C A - M E D I T E R R A N E A N W O N D E R

One big part of Hive Open Days '26 next to all the exciting presentations will be our special Saturday trip to Tabarca Island, a small inhabited island in the Valencian Community. We'll board a boat in the morning for the ~22km crossing, spend the whole day exploring, and return to the mainland in the early afternoon.
Tabarca is tiny: around 1.8 km long and just 400 m wide. It's the smallest permanently inhabited island in Spain, home to only about 68 (counted in 2011) year-round residents today. But don't let its size fool you. This place has seen pirates, kings, and rescued prisoners.
For centuries, Barbary pirates used the island as a hideout to launch raids along the Spanish coast. That changed in 1768 when King Charles III paid the ransom for dozens of Genoese families who had been enslaved by the Ottoman Bey of Tunis. He brought them here, built them homes, and surrounded the settlement with fortified walls to protect the coastline from future attacks. The former prisoners named their new home "Nueva Tabarca" after the Tunisian island they had lost. (tabarcaisland.com)
In 1986, Tabarca became Spain's first marine reserve, protecting the largest Posidonia seagrass meadow in the Spanish Mediterranean and waters full of groupers, sea bass, octopuses, and even seahorses.
Today, there are no cars, no banks, no chain stores. Baroque stone gates, a church, a lighthouse standing alone at the edge, whitewashed houses on streets where nothing hurries. It feels like stepping into a 1950s fishing village frozen in time.
You'll have plenty of time to swim in the crystal-clear water (around 19°C 🥶), grab a cool drink, or simply sit in the sun with friends. If you're into history, love nature, or simply want a slow day by the sea - this one's for you!
(translated with deepl.com)

And because a place like this deserves some care, we'll do a @cleanplanet walk together: a relaxed group stroll around parts of the island, picking up any litter we spot. Hopefully, there won't be much to find, but we'll have trash claws, gloves, and bags ready just in case.
It's a small thing, but there's something nice about leaving a place a little better than you found it. And of course, we're making it fun: teams, a bit of competition, and a prize for the winners!

For those curious about the island's past, there's the Museo Nueva Tabarca, set inside an old tuna-fishing warehouse. The Sala Audiovisual has archival footage and documents tracing the islanders' long connection to the sea, and the Sala de Exposición covers everything from local geography and wildlife to fishing traditions.
It won't take long to walk through, but it adds some good context to everything you'll see outside. Hard to look at those old walls the same way once you know who built them and why.

Yesss it's going to be something special! We're planning to offer a live stream so those who can't attend can still be part of it :)
That would be lovely. With this I wouldn't have to worry about not attending.
It would be great to hang out again... Are you coming?
Indeed! Have to read up on all the infos, not sure yet if I can make it.
It would be great after 2 failed attempts :D
3rd time is the charm they say
Yeees!!! Competition time 😂 can't wait!
Hahaha yessss I wish you much luck for the competition xD
I'm not a big fan of boat trips in the sea 😃, but if we have nice weather and calm water, it could be fun... Never visited Tabarca, but I heard some good "reviews" about it... That, combined with a group of awesome Hivians, makes the fun granted!!!
See you in May!
