The Khewra Salt Mine in Punjab, Pakistan is the second largest salt mine in the world, and also a famous tourist attraction. On one spring break, we visited the salt mine enroute to Lahore, a historical city.
The part of the salt mine, which is intended for sight-seeing, is underground, just as other parts of the mine. So we had to took a small train to go down. It was a rather short trip, and soon we were surrounded by rocks of salt, which we could smell in the air. Most of the rocks were bare, just to show us the origin of the salt. We also saw many salt sculptures, in different sizes, shapes and designs. What impressed me most is a salt mosque, said to be the smallest one. Believers can pray there as well.
When we were passing through a salt tunnel, the tour guide told us that the salt can bring people good luck in love and marriage. If one licks the wall of the tunnel, he or she is bound to find true love and marry very well. I hesitated, because I did not think it was clean enough. But a colleague, a 30 year-old man, bravely licked it, perhaps wishing to marry soon. We all had a good laugh.
The journey to the underground salt world as brief, but we had a good time and learned something about salt and salt mining. Salt, which is so trivial, is essential to out life. We couldn't live without salt, yet we shouldn't intake too much of it. There is a degree to everything. Looking at the photos I took then, I recall a lot of interesting things I experienced aboard. I will share more of the photos and stories when I am free.
