Cocoa; From a Small Flower to a Big Fruit

Hoy quiero compartirles unas fotos de un árbol de cacao que está en plena producción en el patio de mi hermana. Este árbol está cargado de frutos en diferentes tamaños, y también tiene muchas flores, ¡todo indica que tendrá una gran cosecha! 🌱

Lo que siempre me sorprende del cacao es cómo de una flor tan pequeña puede surgir un fruto tan grande. Es realmente fascinante. Mi hermana me contó que esta es la tercera vez que este joven árbol produce, y le tiene mucho cariño porque es el único que ha logrado crecer. Aunque ha intentado cultivar otros, estos se le han secado cuando ya tienen cierto tamaño.

Curiosamente, el cacao es una planta muy especial porque sus flores y frutos crecen directamente del tronco o ramas gruesas, un fenómeno llamado "caulifloria". Esta característica permite que el árbol produzca frutos más grandes y de fácil acceso para la polinización, realizada por diminutos insectos como las moscas del cacao. ¡Un trabajo pequeño, pero crucial para que el fruto crezca!

Today I want to share with you some photos of a cocoa tree that is in full production in my sister's backyard. This tree is loaded with fruits in different sizes, and it also has many flowers, everything indicates that it will have a great harvest! 🌱

What always amazes me about cocoa is how from such a small flower can come such a big fruit. It's really fascinating. My sister told me that this is the third time this young tree has produced, and she is very fond of it because it is the only one that has managed to grow. Although she has tried to grow others, they have dried up by the time they are of a certain size.

Curiously, cocoa is a very special plant because its flowers and fruits grow directly from the trunk or thick branches, a phenomenon called “caulifloria”. This characteristic allows the tree to produce larger fruits that are easily accessible for pollination by tiny insects such as cocoa flies, a small but crucial job for the fruit to grow!
