A few snaps from my trip to Madeira at the back end of last year…
I got there after a few days in Lisbon and set about exploring the island for the first time. I didn't do that much in the end, but it was an ideal time to go there as it just fitted in with my plans.
You can see the view of Funchal bay first up. You'll also be able to see the moody skies that lurk most of the time. There was some glorious weather at times, then at others there were storms in the air that sometimes kicked off. That's the nature of the beast I guess!
Also in amongst the shots, you can see the centre of Funchal where the locals and tourists bustled about. Then we have the cruise ships that come in and out, with usually one being moored there at any given time.
Then we have the sports that take place. One of these pics is overlooking the Padel courts which are in a park area with the gorgeous sea and sky backdrop. Padel is like a mix of tennis and squash, and is popular in Spain and Portugal.
I also had a stroll to a nearby fishing village, Câmara de Lobos, which was a pleasant walk and a nice change of pace.
An interesting and relaxing trip all in all before heading back to England. I hope to do a fair bit more though if and when I head back!

Câmara de Lobos sounds really nice, that’s given me an idea for a similar walk when we go in May for our second time
Yeah, it's a nice spot. I was staying in Lido, so about a half hour walk to Funchal centre and probably an hour to Câmara de Lobos in the other direction. The tourist buses have it as one of their stop-offs too!
May time we stayed at the Vidamar which was ready good and this time we’re staying at the Carlton (Pestana) which is a little more in Funchal. A nice slow walk and perhaps the bus back if it’s a bit on the hot side.
Can’t wait to return!
Sounds great, enjoy!
I’ll share the photos here on Hive in May
Did you tried the local specialty Madeira skewers in which the meat is grilled over a fire on a laurel stick ?
Yes I had something like that… tasty!
