Sunset...on my photography career!!

in Photo Lovers2 days ago (edited)

It had been almost a year since I'd taken the old Sony SLR out for a spin, and after some rather disappointing results, had perhaps taken my bat and ball home a little. However, a planned trip down to Nathorn sea front at sunset had me reaching for the old brick, and with auto mode and .jpg being the only settings I needed, hit the sand. Seriously, how could anyone go wrong with one of nature's finest displays?

For me, any simple pleasure has the ability to become a major source of stress and grief and so it transpired, I couldn't find the wire to connect the camera to the computer and had to remove the huge, old style SD card. Then I couldn't find a card reader before remembering an old Lenovo in the bottom of the wardrobe that had a reader but hadnt been turned on for years. You see how it goes? Anyway, three hours later and the photos were on my laptop.

I like this one. It came out very brown and golden-ish but as was a theme throughout these shots, the sun was flared and had very little definition.

This shot just looks so washed out. I don't know if makes a huge difference, but I realised after that I'd left the camera in RAW setting and had to change most of the pictures to .jpg using an online converter. That said, this didn't look great in its original format, either!

This could have been good if the sun wasn't all flared. I'm sure there must be a photographic name for this but I don't know what it is. I'm also sure there could be a way to reduce it in photoshop but as I neither have, nor know how to use it, that's not going to happen. Shame though.

This would definitely have been my favourite but again, same problem with the sun. I did actually try again with the boat a little more central...

Still poor :-(

This just looks like a washed out Kodacolour shot from the 70's. Dreadful!

I think this camera will go back in its box, never to see the light of day again. Its not the camera's fault, I know, but I really just can't be bothered learning a new skill when using even my cheapo Samsung phone will produce photographs that I am more often than not, extremely happy with.

Having said all that. If any members of this esteemed community do have suggestions to settings that may have made these photos better, please let me know and I will give it another go.

Finally, one I took with aforementioned Samsung A34! Much better, obviously more processed by the phone but who cares if its a nicer photo?

If nothing else, this little exercise has certainly given me a renewed respect to the art of a professional photographer!

I hope everyone has had a fantastic start to the new year and are enjoying the ride on the crypto markets.

Best wishes

Martin

The last one is actually pretty epic! I get your problem haha and these days newer model laptop don't even have those card reader where you can just plug your SD card and good to-go. I hate that they remove that helpful feature.

Judging by these shots, you're good to go starting your new career as photographers😄

You're right, they don't, and I have cards going back 20+ years, including some old Sony Memory Sticks which I'm sure you won't remember....hang on, I've probably got memory cards OLDER than you!!! 😭😭😭😭 Thats it, I'm going back under my rock to sulk again lol ;-)

Your shots are pretty, with those reflections. But I'm not a good photographer so I don't know how to improve those shots. In my eyes they are all beautiful.
Happy new year😁.

@asiaymalay, what a simply lovely comment. Thank you so much. I'm touched. Wishing you an amazing new year also :-)

How wonderful you got your camera out 😎
I like your captures, don’t be too harsh on yourself.
I love the second photo, with the people… the soft colours… 🥰 it could easily be a print! I mean it 😊

If you have time, check out my post from today… i am taking you along feeding the wild deer in my garden and documented it the last week through photos and video. It also shows the amount of snow we got yesterday. It is 62 cm deep now 😳

Have a fantastic day

Bloody sun and its antics! I used to use an ND filter on my old DSLR when I still used it. To be honest the idea of going back to using it and fannying around with laptops and photoshop and all manner of getting it from one device to the other fills me with fear now so I am not surprised you will be retiring your old SLR bastart! That washed out one really does look like a 70's pic!

Absolute hassle unless it's a serious hobby. I just like the photos because they look pretty and they're a memory hence the phone will be just fine! Synchronisation across devices via cloud storage is one of the best advances in technology in the past years in my book!

That's why I'm a phone fan these days. You can get some amazing pics versus effort and sync all over the shot. The future isn't always shite! 😃😃

I like the washed out one with the pretty sky! I've saved it to my collection of inspirational pictures for my knitting designs.

I agree about the faff. I'm keeping an old camera because it was so expensive and I feel I should do something with it. I'm not sure the camera itself is any good, I think it was handled roughly one time. But there is a zoom lens with it that might be useful to someone ....

Aww thank you. This camera was actually a gift from my cousin's lad who is a mad keen photographer. He'd seen some of my photos on Thailand and thought I might like to have an old, but 'proper' camera to improve and take better photos with so I couldn't really say no. I've made an effort so next visit to the UK, I'll give him it back and say thanks, but it's not for me!

The washed-out photo so reminded me of my dads pictures of the beach at Weston Super Mare when I was a kid. Its strange what triggers distant memories! For reference its Nathorn beach, Koh Samui, Thailand.
Hope the new year has started on a high note for you and thank you, Shani. Glad you're still here after all this time :-)
