Day 19 - Why do you journal?

"NaJoPoMo 24 - Day 19.JPG"I've been asked what I journal about. Or how to get started and where I buy my journals. But I've never been asked why I journal.

I journal to get all the stuff in my head, out. That can mean organizing my thoughts, relieving my overloaded brain/emotions, and working out perspective on a situation. And I also journal to capture memories. Plus, I'm a sucker for the journal section in any store - all the new, blank pages and pretty covers. If I'm buying them, I should use them.

Why do you journal?

Day 19 - National Journal Posting Month √

Sort:

In some ways a journal is like a time capsule of who you were at any given moment in time.

I started journaling when I was 13, after we moved to another country. It was a way to give form to a lot of conflicting thoughts, both about the move, and about my parents' divorce.

In much later years, it has really been a version of this:

I journal to get all the stuff in my head, out.

In computer terms, the journal is a bit like an external drive where I can store stuff and get it to where it's not cluttering current stuff I'm working on. And sometimes my journal serves as a repository of ideas I can come back to later... when I have more time.

Of course, some of it is just adult ADHD management!
