Have you ever heard of Stendhal syndrome?
It is a rare psychosomatic condition that can occur when someone experiences a strong emotional connection to a work of art.
We worried that my granddaughter was experiencing it when she stood in front of a Van Gogh in the Musée d'Orsay sobbing quietly.
No one disturbed her and seeing these paintings is an experience she will never forget. It took a while before she was able to move on.
And it wasn't until much later that she could talk about it.
She is passionate about Broadway musicals and it seems she was singing the songs from Starry Musical to herself as she stood before these famous paintings.
STARRY is the story about two brothers, Theo and Vincent van Gogh, and their journey together to find the power of expression.
Since returning from Paris, she borrowed my copy of 'Lust for Life' by Irving Stone and I'm sure the book came alive for her because of her experience at the museum.

Vincent Van Gogh was an amazing artist. It's sad that he died so young.
It's a beautiful thing your granddaughter was fortunate enough to experience. Sometimes it happens because of a love of art and sometimes it happens to *inspire* a love of art. To be so moved is a testament to the artist and the viewer alike!

Great artworks and I felt them coming alive as I gazed upon them, your granddaughter is definitely an appreciator of great artworks.
I love VanGogh too, so I understand how she feels!
It must have been very emotional for her, I think she was looking beyond the artwork.

Very powerful experience. Your granddaughter will carry that with her through life and be a better person because of it. My wife is in a book club and recently read The Secret Life of Sunflowers. It is the story of Theo's wife basically told and discovered by her granddaughter. Amazing works of art! Although I've never had Stendhal syndrome it is understandable. I'm glad she enjoyed the Van Gogh's, there really is nothing like seeing them in person.
