I want to put this calmly, because for me there is a deep misunderstanding that keeps coming back whenever we talk about AI and robotics. No, I do not see these technologies as a threat. And no, I do not mourn the disappearance of work as we have known it. On the contrary. I see in them, perhaps at last, a way out at the top.

I am in favor of universal basic income, which I call Universal Allocation, as it is not related to a job, at all...
Not out of resignation, not out of fear of the future, but because I sincerely believe that computerization, robotics and now AI offer us a historic opportunity: to loosen the grip of forced labor. To free human beings from a model that for far too long has confused subsistence with alienation.

Computer science and robotics started this process a long time ago. They have gradually reduced the share of human effort required for material production. Blue collar workers were the first to be affected, and I find it almost hypocritical that this did not trigger a deeper collective reflection earlier. Entire professions were allowed to disappear, under the explanation that it was the price of progress, that “the market would adapt”. In reality, individuals were simply asked to adapt on their own.

Today, AI extends this dynamic, but on another level. It begins to automate intellectual and cognitive tasks.

White collar workers are now discovering what it means to be replaceable.
And suddenly the debate ignites. Moral panic, talk of the end of work, fear of downgrading.
Personally, I do not see a catastrophe here. I see a logical continuity. And perhaps even a regained coherence.

Because if machines, whether mechanical or algorithmic, produce most of the value, then continuing to condition the right to live on a human job becomes absurd.
AI is not the problem. The problem is our almost religious attachment to salaried work as the sole key to dignity. A dignity that, in my view, should be unconditional.

This is precisely where a universal basic income indexed to the poverty threshold makes sense. Not as a stopgap, not as a disguised social aid, but as a structural foundation.

A simple recognition: in an automated world, everyone must have access to basic material means, regardless of their ability or willingness to sell themselves on an increasingly narrow labor market.

Indexed to the poverty threshold, because the goal is not to barely survive, but to live with dignity. To not spend one’s life managing fear of tomorrow. To be able to say no. No to meaningless jobs. No to exploitation disguised as opportunity. No to the endless race for “added value”.

And this is where my fight truly lies: freeing humans from forced labor does not mean abolishing all forms of activity. Quite the opposite. I believe many things would be reborn if survival were no longer at stake. Creation, transmission, care, research, local involvement, artistic or spiritual exploration. Everything that is today pushed aside as non profitable could finally reclaim space.

AI and robotics steal nothing from us. They take back what should never have been the core of our lives: repetition, productivity for productivity’s sake, dependence on markets.
If they can do this better than we can, so much the better. On the condition that the fruits of this efficiency are not captured by a minority, but redistributed in the form of time, security and freedom.

I therefore do not see universal basic income as a defensive response to a collapsing world, but as an essential building block of a world that could finally open up.
I insist: computer science, robotics and AI are not enemies. They are powerful tools. The real question is not whether they will transform our relationship to work, that is already done, but whether we will have the courage to go all the way with the logic they make possible.

Je vais poser ça calmement, parce que pour moi il y a un malentendu profond qui revient sans cesse dès qu’on parle d’IA, de robotique. Non, je ne vois pas ces technologies comme une menace. Et non, je ne pleure pas la disparition du travail tel qu’on l’a connu. Au contraire. J’y vois peut être, enfin, une sortie par le haut.

Je suis favorable à l’allocation universelle. Pas par résignation, pas par peur de l’avenir, mais parce que je pense sincèrement que l’informatisation, la robotique et maintenant l’IA nous offrent une occasion historique: celle de desserrer l’étau du travail contraint. Celle de libérer l’humain d’un modèle qui a confondu trop longtemps subsistance et aliénation.

L’informatique et la robotique ont commencé le travail il y a déjà longtemps. Elles ont progressivement réduit la part de l’effort humain nécessaire à la production matérielle. Les cols bleus ont été les premiers touchés, et je trouve presque hypocrite que cela n’ait pas déclenché plus tôt une réflexion collective de fond. On a laissé des métiers entiers disparaître, en expliquant que c’était le prix du progrès, que “le marché s’adapterait”. En réalité, on a surtout exigé des individus qu’ils s’adaptent seuls.

Aujourd’hui, l’IA vient prolonger cette dynamique, mais à un autre niveau. Elle commence à automatiser des tâches intellectuelles, cognitives.

Les cols blancs découvrent à leur tour ce que signifie être remplaçable.
Et là, soudainement, le débat s’emballe. Panique morale, discours sur la fin du travail, peur du déclassement.
Personnellement, je n’y vois pas une catastrophe. J’y vois une continuité logique. Et peut être même une cohérence retrouvée.

Car si les machines, qu’elles soient mécaniques ou algorithmiques, produisent l’essentiel de la valeur, alors persister à conditionner le droit de vivre à un emploi humain devient absurde.
Ce n’est pas l’IA qui pose problème. C’est notre attachement quasi religieux au travail salarié comme unique clé d’accès à la dignité. Une dignité qui, à mes yeux, devrait être inconditionnelle.

C’est précisément là que l’allocation universelle indexée sur le seuil de pauvreté prend tout son sens. Pas comme un palliatif, pas comme une aide sociale déguisée, mais comme un socle structurel.

Une reconnaissance simple: dans un monde automatisé, chacun doit avoir accès aux moyens matériels de base, indépendamment de sa capacité ou de sa volonté à se vendre sur un marché du travail de plus en plus étroit.

Indexée sur le seuil de pauvreté, parce qu’il ne s’agit pas de survivre à peine, mais de vivre dignement. De ne pas passer son existence à gérer la peur du lendemain. De pouvoir dire non. Non à un emploi vide de sens. Non à une exploitation maquillée en opportunité. Non à la course permanente à la valeur ajoutée.

Et c’est là tout mon combat: libérer l’humain du travail contraint ne signifie pas abolir toute forme d’activité. Bien au contraire. Je pense que beaucoup de choses renaîtraient si la survie n’était plus en jeu. Création, transmission, soin, recherche, engagement local, exploration artistique ou spirituelle… Tout ce qui est aujourd’hui relégué au rang de non rentable pourrait enfin reprendre de la place.

L’IA et la robotique ne nous volent rien. Elles reprennent ce qui n’aurait jamais dû être le cœur de nos vies: la répétition, la productivité pour la productivité, la dépendance aux marchés.
Si elles peuvent faire cela mieux que nous, tant mieux. À condition que les fruits de cette efficacité ne soient pas captés par une minorité, mais redistribués sous forme de temps, de sécurité et de liberté.

Je ne vois donc pas l’allocation universelle comme une réponse défensive à un monde qui s’effondre, mais comme une brique essentielle d’un monde qui pourrait enfin s’ouvrir.
J’insiste: Informatique, robotique et IA ne sont pas des ennemies. Elles sont des outils puissants. La vraie question n’est pas de savoir si elles vont transformer notre rapport au travail, c’est déjà fait, mais si nous aurons le courage d’aller jusqu’au bout de la logique qu’elles rendent possible.
