Hello, friends! 😊

Last spring, I found myself in the heart of Lviv, waiting for a meeting near the Church of Sts. Olga and Elizabeth. My companion was running a bit late, so I decided to make the most of the moment and photograph the church from various angles. Although I had photographed it before, this time felt special — my first shots with a smartphone I’m genuinely proud of!

Let me share the story behind this magnificent landmark that dominates the skyline of Lviv.

Interestingly, despite the city's growth, the Church of Sts. Olga and Elizabeth remains the tallest building in Lviv, standing at 85 meters, with its towering spire accounting for much of its height. Built over a century ago, it’s a testament to the grand architectural ambitions of its time.

The church was constructed in memory of Empress Elisabeth of Bavaria, known as Sisi, the beloved wife of Emperor Franz Joseph of Austria-Hungary. In 1898, Sisi was tragically assassinated by an anarchist during a walk by Lake Geneva. Deeply grieving her loss, the emperor sought to commemorate her in a lasting way.

At the turn of the 20th century, Lviv was thriving as a European city and an important railway hub. A growing Catholic community, particularly railway workers, needed a grand place of worship. Construction of the church began in 1904, and by 1911, this stunning Neo-Gothic structure stood proudly on the western outskirts of the city.

The church endured many trials during its history. It was damaged during the Ukrainian-Polish War of 1918-1919 and again in 1939 when a bomb exploded nearby, causing significant harm to its spires and walls. Under Soviet rule, the church was closed and repurposed as a warehouse. It wasn’t until 1991, following Ukraine’s independence, that the church was reopened, restored, and consecrated for the Greek Catholic community.

Today, the Church of Sts. Olga and Elizabeth is not just a place of worship but a symbol of resilience and faith. Despite wars, neglect, and challenges, it remains a beacon of hope and a testament to Lviv’s rich history and culture.

I hope my story and photos inspire you to visit this architectural gem and experience its grandeur for yourself. May we all find strength and protection in these challenging times. 💙💛
