Izola is a charming small coastal town nestled between Koper and Piran. Its name originates from the island on which it was originally founded. Today, it’s best known as a tourist destination, but the locals remain deeply connected to fishing, olive oil production, and winemaking. Tourism in the area began to develop with the discovery of thermal waters in 1820. The town boasts a rich history, hidden behind the walls of its old town center.
Every town has its coat of arms, a symbol of historical significance. Izola’s existence might have been cut short if the Genoese had succeeded in their plan back in 1380. During the turbulent era of city-state wars, the Genoese set sail toward Izola, determined to dominate maritime trade in the Mediterranean.
According to legend, the desperate townsfolk sought refuge in prayer at the parish church. At that moment, Saint Maurus came to their aid. From the church, a white dove took flight, soaring above the Genoese fleet. A miraculous fog, summoned by Saint Maurus, shrouded Izola from view. Unable to see the shore, the Genoese sailors decided to follow the dove, believing it would lead them to land, as doves rarely venture far from the coast.
However, the clever dove led them far out into open waters before returning to the church. In its beak, it carried an olive branch, a sign of peace and safety. Izola was saved, and the dove remains a cherished symbol of the town’s enduring spirit.
