Hail to the Hive!
Everyone has been in a panic in the UK about the weather. Ooooh it’s hot, hottest day of the tear! Danger danger. Unbelievable. Two days of actual summer conditions and they carry on like it’s the end of the world. Mind you on the canals there is a bit of a temperature hack you can do. Pop into a long tunnel and go slow. It is nice and cool.
I used to worry chugging through these for fear that the engine would breakdown and leave us having to pull the boat through using the chains along the tunnel walls.
But now I quite enjoy them. The cool temperature and damp smells. The interesting brickwork forming the arch of the roof. Amazing engineering.
And also the feeling that you’re usually the only ones in there. A secret place only canal boaters get to see and travel through. That adventurous feeling you got exploring places you shouldn’t be as a kid is almost rekindled when traveling through and the old memories of those times wander through your thoughts as the sound of the two cylinder diesel engine chugs you slowly through the tunnel to the brightness at the end of 5he tunnel.
And back into the world again
