There’s a certain complexity in capturing portraits of people who struggle with alcohol. They’re almost always on the defensive. The friend I’m introducing to you today—whose name I don’t actually know—has been called “El Chino” for as long as I’ve known him. Perhaps it’s because of the shape of his eyes, though he has no Asian heritage.
At first, he was quite reluctant to let me photograph him. He asked, “Now you’re a cop?” Perhaps he thought I’d expose him to the gossiping tongues of the community or even take the photos to the police to file a complaint. But after sharing a couple of drinks and talking for a while, he let his guard down and allowed me to capture his portrait.
Me decía: “¿Ahora eres policía?”.
