Monochrome street photography around Canary Wharf - My entry in to Monomad on Hive

in Black And White16 hours ago (edited)

Every now and then I have to travel to London to see clients. I'll be honest and say I try to avoid it like the plague. It's literally like visiting another country these days even though I only live around 150 miles away.

But that being said, when I do visit London, I always take a camera.

On this occasion I travelled by train. The location I was visiting was really difficult to get to by car and I didn't relish the 3am start and 5 hours sat in traffic followed by another 5 hours trying to get home.

After my meeting finished I found myself with 4 hours to kill before my train was due to leave. I jumped on the London Tube network and headed to Canary Wharf, a financial district on the east side of London.

These photos are also my entry into Monomad!

Adams Plaza

In Canary Wharf is this impressive footbridge linking a financial district to transport links around London. My inner graphic designer quite likes the lines and angles and I always pop by to take a photo when visiting.

Dramatic angles with a bonus redhead passing by although in monochrome you would never know!

Activating Wobble Mode

I took a tripod with me yesterday to Canary Wharf but it stayed in the bag. Instead I switched my intentional camera wobble mode on. The hit rate isn't great shooting at 0.5 second exposures but it's a lot of fun with abstract results!

Real photography, no Photoshop, no Ai, only camera wobble!

More wobbles, even more abstract!

Passers by

I noticed this yellow and bright wall and had the idea to pan and use long exposures to create an abstract effect of people passing by. It's quite a low hit rate shooting like this and for maybe every 6 photos only one was usable.

Workman or Astronaut

I captured this fully kitted out workman dressed in full PPE orange safety gear and on converting this to monochrome, he looks more like an astronaut than someone on his way to build another skyscraper!

The Way Back Home

As I left Canary Wharf to make my way on the Tube to King's Cross station, I jumped on the new Elizabeth Line. I've never been on this line before and it was noticeably smoother to ride, and faster too! After exiting this line I traversed through tunnels to get to the next platform; these tunnels look like something from a science fiction movie.

The Empty Chairs

Waiting for my next connection, I was surprised to see how quiet it was on the underground. Note to self, line up your shots better!

Emerging in to the Light!

Every time I visit Canary Wharf station, I am struck by the impressive architecture as you ascend the escalators.

The Impressive Roof in King's Cross station

As you emerge from the tube station at King's Cross, you end up in this large concourse covered by an impressive roof structure. I would have taken more photos here but by this time, my knees were starting to complain after the 20,000 step count for the day. I whiled away the time in a fast food joint amazed at how much I'd just paid for a shit chicken burger and a drink!!

About me:
I usually specialise in shooting lightpainting images but occasionally dabble in urbex and artistic model photography. I like to collaborate with other photographers and occassionally shoot outside my comfort zone.
