the ride of your life

We don't have ticket stubs where I come from. No phones with apps and tired retirees in day-glow vests to scan you in and direct you to the pocket-emptying station and its Great Arch of Scrutiny. No will-call, no reservations, no lines. No bodies to bump against and mill through and smell and fake smile at. No bodies at all, actually, until you get where you're going.

Where I come from, "you're in for the ride of your life" is a commitment. Lifelong. It doesn't stop until you do.

And then it goes on.

Without you.
