compact cameras have their benefits too.
depends on a lot of moments. your decision should be based on money, camera price label, your style of photography, the results you want to get, etc etc etc. choose what is more appropriate for you, what suits you.
on my comment above, about the full-frame: this can be a huge help for your maturing as a photographer, for making a step forward and improving photographer skills. at least it worked for me that way, allowed me to start shooting manually, with manual vintage lens... etc. sadly, it all takes money investments into lens. getting more cheap and dated compact-camera - instead of a DSLR - MAY BE - a better, more beneficial way and still a step forward from smartphone photography. all the best, my best wishes to you, really. and I hope 0,5 price label will turn into 5,0 label... in a few years.
