Why Asymetrical SurfBoards?

Breaking Barriers: My 4 Year Journey Surfing Asymmetrical Boards

Surfers are always looking for new ways to improve their performance in the waves. Over the past four years, I've embarked on a fascinating and challenging journey, exploring the world of uneven boards and twin fins... It's like being reborn in Surf

It all started when I started working in partnership with the talented shaper Matheus "Maze", a great friend of mine, we started developing a quiver for the waves of the NorthShore of Espirito Santo and some models of Asymmetric Fuguetes in the Test phase, like A bolinha Asym, which in the future ended up refining itself and becoming Sweet Amnesia, just like Darling Paralelogram.

Initially the idea of ​​Asymmetry was not so fresh in my mind, and this is funny because it seems that I surfed with this model of board my whole life, but no. In Espirito Santo there are some more oceanic waves with a lot of energy, they don't reach Big Surf waves and they don't even reach a Slab but I believe I'm in the middle ground, so good equipment makes a total difference, otherwise you get stuck in the wave channel or flying in the Drop, and it's not an Airdrop it's not flying lol, sometimes the offshore wind is insane so the board has to have projection to enter the wave, ideal volume for paddling in the current and versatility for maneuvers base and lip. I got to thinking: Ah, asymmetrical or Twin Fin must be difficult, but I was wrong... the biggest sessions I spent in surfing were in the last 2 years.

3 factors that boosted this journey with Custom Boards

My brother-in-law studies fluid mechanics, and I, as a mechanical engineer, started to fry in the idea of ​​the countless possibilities and creation options with an asymmetrical shape, such as Keels, ideal for the body geometry of the surfer in question... and you already know, right? , all the variables we previously studied were not enough to describe and contextualize everything we experience with these magic carpets. We developed boards that challenged traditional conventions and gave me unique experiences in the most diverse sea conditions.

The amount of Surf movies I saw in my youth, right down to the Talented Ryan Burch, Surfer and Californian Artist, Person who practically spread and really warmed up this whole movement of Asymmetrical Boards, when I met Maze and we shared about that in common was like coffee with milk, rice and beans, boom. The phase I was living in my life when the opportunity arose to make the first asymmetrical models for Airdrop Culture in partnership with Maze Surf Crafts.

Defying Conventions

When I decided to explore asymmetrical boards, I realized that I was venturing into uncharted territory... as for Twin fins? I had already surfed in some conditions, but nothing to the point of really feeling the possibilities and limits of the twin board in more powerful conditions. Asymmetry in general provides a unique surfing experience, increasing speed, agility and cornering ability in waves.

Although many surfers are used to symmetrical three-fin boards robotic movements in handouts and everything, I saw an open book with these lines that I started to perform. I challenged myself, I got out of my comfort zone and after a lot of riding, a good wave, today I have a few different asymmetrical models that I align with combinations of fins and I surf more extreme conditions, like Slabs to the Right, even though I'm a goofyfooter just like hollow and fast tubes

The Learning Journey:

The first moments with the asymmetrical boards were a true learning journey. The balance and the sensations were different, and I had to adapt to a new way of surfing... the biggest situation, I went up the bomb in front of my friends and many times I fell in the drop because the control of the board was different.. Through attempts and mistakes, I started to understand the nuances of these boards, to take advantage of the advantages they offered and explore their maximum potential, even when it seemed to go wrong, I started to ''improvise'' and in that improvisation I started to let go more for different performances on the waves .

SWEET AMNÉSIA MODEL

Its striking step-deck, outline with “side-cuts” and a smooth curve near the fins turn this Fish into an extremely versatile board, with a well-rounded drive, a lot of fun in the waves and incredible ability in barrel waves.

Because it has extra volume, a very straight rocker and thick edges, the “sweet amensia ” can be used in a very small size compared to “conventional” boards.

Single-to-double concave + Asym fins make up its bottom. We advise the use of keel-fish category fins on day-to-day and modern twins may be welcome on smaller days.

Exploring Different Sea Conditions:

One of the great advantages of asymmetric boards is their versatility. I was able to test them in a wide range of sea conditions, from small, fast waves to bigger, more powerful swells. Regardless of the wave type, they are incredibly responsive and able to handle the demands of the sea amazingly. This diversity of experiences has allowed me to expand my surfing repertoire and develop skills that I wouldn't have achieved with traditional boards, or maybe achieved in a different way, and that's not bad, not good, it's just different. Follow the dance.

Detaching from the Usual and Ordinary:

Surfing with asymmetrical boards taught me a valuable lesson that transcends the world of surfing: the power of detaching ourselves from the usual and the ordinary. in this new one because you feel and believe that potential lies there, I was able to work my mind and my perspective on many points in life.

I became more adaptable, in fact less passionate, what few people say about Surf but it is true, is that there is a craving, a somewhat toxic animation, due to the demand of the days, tight schedules, huge crowd, among other reasons, I see that Surf has a slightly denser energy compared to when I started surfing, and now with more than 10 years of Surfing but open to exploring new opportunities, more willing to leave my comfort zone I gained an extra peace with myself same and with others in the water.. as well as greater integration with the environment.. a path I did not expect..

Tudo começou quando comecei a trabalhar em parceria com o talentoso shaper Matheus "Maze", grande amigo meu, começamos desenvolvendo um quiver para as ondas do NorthShore do Espírito Santo e alguns modelos de Fuguetes Assimétricas em fase de Teste, como Uma bolinha Asym, que futuramente acabou se refinando e se tornando Sweet Amnesia, assim como Darling Paralelogram.

Inicialmente a ideia da Assimetria não estava tão fresca na minha cabeça, e isso é engraçado porque parece que eu surfei com esse modelo de prancha a vida toda, mas não. No Espírito Santo tem umas ondas mais oceânicas com muita energia, não chegam a ondas Big Surf e nem chegam a um Slab mas acredito que estou no meio termo, então um bom equipamento faz total diferença , senão você fica preso no canal da onda ou voando no Drop, e não é Airdrop não é voando kkk, as vezes o vento offshore é insano então a prancha tem que ter projeção para entrar na onda, volume ideal para remar na correnteza e versatilidade para manobras de base e lábio. Fiquei pensando: Ah, assimétrico ou Twin Fin deve ser difícil, mas me enganei... as maiores sessões que passei no surf foram nos últimos 2 anos.

Meu cunhado estuda mecânica dos fluidos, e eu, como engenheiro mecânico, comecei a fritar na ideia das inúmeras possibilidades e opções de criação com formato assimétrico, como o Keels, ideal para a geometria corporal do surfista em questão... e você já sabe né? , todas as variáveis ​​que estudamos anteriormente não foram suficientes para descrever e contextualizar tudo o que vivenciamos com esses tapetes mágicos. Desenvolvemos pranchas que desafiaram as convenções tradicionais e me proporcionaram experiências únicas nas mais diversas condições de mar.

Desafiando as Convenções

Quando decidi explorar as pranchas assimétricas, percebi que estava a aventurar-me num território desconhecido... quanto às barbatanas gêmeas? Já tinha surfado em algumas condições, mas nada a ponto de realmente sentir as possibilidades e limites da prancha dupla em condições mais potentes. A assimetria em geral proporciona uma experiência de surf única, aumentando a velocidade, agilidade e capacidade de curvas nas ondas.

Embora muitos surfistas estejam acostumados com movimentos robóticos simétricos de pranchas de três quilhas em apostilas e tudo mais, vi um livro aberto com essas linhas que comecei a executar. Me desafiei, saí da minha zona de conforto e depois de muito surfar, uma boa onda, hoje tenho alguns modelos assimétricos diferentes que alinho com combinações de quilhas e surfo em condições mais extremas, como Slabs to the Right, mesmo que eu seja um pateta como tubos ocos e rápidos

Os primeiros momentos com as pranchas assimétricas foram um verdadeiro aprendizado. O equilíbrio e as sensações eram diferentes, e tive que me adaptar a uma nova forma de surfar... a situação maior, subia a bomba na frente dos meus amigos e muitas vezes caía no drop por causa do controle da prancha era diferente.. Através de tentativas e erros, fui entendendo as nuances dessas pranchas, para aproveitar as vantagens que elas ofereciam e explorar o seu potencial máximo, mesmo quando parecia dar errado, comecei a ''improvisar'' e nessa improvisação fui me soltando mais para diferentes apresentações nas ondas.

Tornei-me mais adaptável, aliás menos apaixonado, o que poucos dizem do Surf mas é verdade, é que existe uma ânsia, uma animação um tanto tóxica, pela exigência dos dias, horários apertados, crowd enorme, entre outros motivos , vejo que o Surf tem uma energia um pouco mais densa em relação a quando comecei a surfar, e agora com mais de 10 anos de Surf mas aberto a explorar novas oportunidades, com mais vontade de sair da minha zona de conforto ganhei uma paz extra comigo mesmo e com outros na água.. além de uma maior integração com o meio ambiente.. um caminho que eu não esperava..
