Sage Oil as a Traditional Medicine

Sage (Salvia sclarea) oil is extracted from leaves and flower heads of sage plants. This plant is cultivated throughout Northern Europe and Asia Minor. In Turkey, sage grows naturally in wild places in Karaburun Mountain between Kars region and Zonguldak province. It was called Salep here (saliva), and this name has preserved itself until now. Sages belong to mint family and grow up around 10 meters high from the ground. They bear white flowers in spring and greenish yellow leaves through summer. Fruits are small berries and seeds covered whitish coat. Sage oil contains essential oils including thujone and pinene. Thujones include camphor, cineole and beta-myrcenol whereas Sage essential oil is a mixture of volatile compounds from several species of the Lamiaceae family, which include sage, oregano, and thyme. The essential oil has been used for centuries to treat a wide variety of ailments, and recent research has confirmed its potential for a wide range of health benefits, such as treating anxiety, depression, and headaches.
