I will be sharing my experience with our Year End Party. This year’s Year End Party—(2024) started with a lot of excitement. Initially, the theme was Disney characters, which seemed fun at first, but as the day approached, most of us realized we didn’t have costumes that fit the theme. With limited time and resources, we voiced our concerns, and thankfully, the organizers decided to make the theme more flexible: “any character.”

The change was a huge relief, as it allowed us to choose characters we felt more connected to or could easily create. For my costume, I decided to cosplay Mikasa Ackerman from Attack on Titan—but with a goth twist. Interestingly, when I looked it up, I found out that Mikasa’s goth-inspired style is actually acknowledged online, which made my choice feel even more fitting.

I decided not to wear her iconic military jacket. Instead, I focused on putting together an outfit that leaned fully into the goth aesthetic—dark clothes, edgy makeup, and simple but striking accessories. It was my way of expressing Mikasa’s strong, stoic personality while giving her a unique flair.

The party started in the morning, and the excitement in the air was undeniable. People arrived in a wide range of costumes, from Disney characters and anime characters to movie icons and original creations. The classroom was soon buzzing with energy as everyone admired each other’s looks and took photos together. We didn’t have extravagant props or professional costumes, but the creativity in the designs was amazing. Most of us used materials like cartolinas and other simple, handmade decorations to create our characters. It was inspiring to see how we could all turn basic supplies into something unique and special.

As I walked in, dressed as goth Mikasa, I was both nervous and excited. Thankfully, my classmates were quick to recognize the character and appreciated the creative twist I added. I heard a few people say, “Mikasa, but make it goth!” and it made me laugh. Their positive reactions boosted my confidence and reminded me why I loved the character so much.

The venue was decorated beautifully, with drawings and writings on the board, decorations inside the classroom, and other little touches. The festive vibes blended perfectly with the colorful array of costumes, creating a unique and cheerful atmosphere. We also had some fun DIY decorations made from cartolinas and other supplies, all crafted by our classmates. It was amazing how almost everyone contributed to the designs and decorations, and it made the party feel even more personal and special.

One of the highlights of the morning was the costume parade. Each of us got a chance to walk to the front and showcase our outfits. When it was my turn, I walked confidently, channeling Mikasa’s composed demeanor but with a goth edge. The applause and cheers from my friends were the perfect validation of my effort.

After the parade, we dived into various activities. There were games that had us laughing so hard, and of course, plenty of food to keep us energized. Even though it was a party, it felt more like a celebration of creativity and friendship.

By the time the party ended around 1 PM, we were all tired but happy. As we cleaned up the classroom, we couldn’t stop talking about the best costumes, the funniest moments, and how much fun we had despite the last-minute theme change.

Looking back, I’m glad I chose Mikasa Ackerman with a goth style. It wasn’t just a costume, it was a chance to express myself while honoring a character I admire. Finding out that Mikasa already had a goth look online made it feel even more fitting, and ditching the jacket for a darker, more minimalist style made it uniquely mine.

This year’s Christmas party wasn’t perfect, but it didn’t need to be. From the theme change to the wide variety of costumes, everything came together in a way that felt spontaneous and fun. It was a reminder that sometimes, the best memories are made when things don’t go exactly as planned.

Whether through creative costumes, shared laughs, or simply spending time together, the magic of the holidays is always about the people and the joy we create. As I left the classroom that afternoon, I felt grateful for the experience, the memories, and the connections that made this year’s party so special.
