Khanom Wong (Thai Fried Dough Ring) 🥨🥨

  • Hello from Thailand, everyone! 🤗 Today I made a dessert called Khanom Wong. It's an ancient Thai sweet made from dough, shaped into rings with a hole in the center, similar to a donut, and coated with a sugar glaze. This type of snack incorporates banana or sweet potato into the dough mixture to make the texture soft and naturally sweet. The process is simple, which I've divided into two parts: the dough and the sugar glaze. Here it is!

🥯 Dough Ingredients

  • 200 grams of glutinous rice flour
  • 30 grams of rice flour
  • 1–2 ripe bananas
  • 1 egg
  • 1/2 cup coconut milk
  • 1 tablespoon palm sugar
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • Oil for frying

🍬 Sugar Glaze Ingredients

  • 240 grams of palm sugar
  • 80 grams of granulated sugar
  • 40 grams of water
  • Toasted white sesame seeds for sprinkling

🫕 Instructions

  • Prepare a mixing bowl. Add the bananas and mash until smooth.

  • Add the glutinous rice flour and rice flour. Knead until well combined.

  • Add the egg, palm sugar, and salt. Continue kneading until incorporated.

  • Gradually add the coconut milk little by little, kneading continuously until the mixture comes together into a smooth, non-sticky dough.

  • Divide the dough into portions, about 35g each. Roll each portion into a long rope about 1 cm thick, then join the ends to form a ring shape.

  • Fry the dough rings in oil over medium-low heat until puffed, cooked through, and golden brown.

  • Drain on a wire rack to remove excess oil.

Making the Crispy Sugar Glaze

  • Prepare a pot. Add the palm sugar, granulated sugar, and water. Place over medium heat.

  • Simmer until the sugar dissolves and begins to thicken into a light caramel.

  • Pour the cooked sugar syrup over the fried snacks. Sprinkle with toasted sesame seeds. Let it set until dry, and the sugar will harden into a crisp, glazed coating.

  • The texture is soft and chewy, with a moist and fragrant sweetness. It has a subtle richness that keeps it from drying out and gives it a well-rounded flavor.

  • The sugar glaze that sets into thin flakes provides a light crispiness, which contrasts perfectly with the soft, chewy texture of the snack.

  • It's a delicious, simple dessert worth trying. Thanks for stopping by, and see you next time!😀😀
